Xavier Luna is the Featured Idol of September 2022
|
Xavier Luna (born December 22, 1993), known professionally by the pseudonyms XAVI and 4REALMS, is a Filipino musician, social media personality, and creative director. Luna rose to prominence after competing in MBS reality survival program SOL Puzzle in 2021, debuting in project boy band SOLVIZ which was active for 2.5 years. In 2024, he founded project band Awkward Boy Syndrome, which went on to become one of the most popular indie bands in South Korea of the 2020s. His YouTube channel, launched in 2021, has amassed over 3.5 million subscribers as of 2026.
In August 2022, Luna released his first droplet single "Blazing Flame", which went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2022 in South Korea. In late 2022, he signed with 24D Records, and further gained popularity after producing multiple K-pop hits over 2023. In January 2024, he collaborated with British singer Jay Kang on the special single "Do Flower Boys Dream of Utopian Cities?", which marked his second number-one song in the country and also earned him his first top 40 hit in the United Kingdom. His 2025 studio album, XAVI (2025), garnered critical acclaim and charted in over 15 countries. His music has been described to be art pop, with a wide range of musical influences.
Luna has rose as a television personality in South Korea for his humor and viral moments, being a regular cast member of variety show Sisters Class and a former MC for K-Pop On Top. He has also risen as an actor, starring in award-winning investigative thriller One-Hit Worship (2023) in addition to television dramas Camp (2024) and Bitter Daydreamers (2025). His accolades include five Hangang Artistry Awards wins and one Shining Groove Awards, Hangang Entertainment Awards, Seoul Music Performance Awards, and HKRT Year End Awards win. He is also a staunch advocate of various mental health, labor rights, indigenous rights, and LGBTQ+ rights initiatives.
Early life[]
Xavi Benedict Luna was born on December 22, 1993 in Albay Province, Philippines. He is ethnically of Filipino and Korean descent, but was unfortunately never able to meet his biological parents, who abandoned him within the grounds of a local cemetery and was saved by an orphanage. Xavier spent the first few years of his life within the orphanage, which was owned by a Catholic institution. In an episode of variety program Sisters Class, he became emotionally vulnerable after talking about this dark beginning of his life:
“ |
To be honest, knowing about how I came to be as a person is one of the uncomfortable things that I'll never find a satisfactory explanation for. I'm sure my biological parents had their reasons. Maybe I was an unwanted pregnancy, they were poor and couldn't financially sustain me, or some other factors. But of course, it's something that will forever feel crushing, the fact that you were at one point something that wasn't worth keeping- It's an idea that I will never wish even upon my worst enemy. But the past is the past now, and there's no use wallowing over it. I tell myself, what I should be focusing instead is making sure that the years of blood, sweat, and tears that my mother has exerted into making sure I live a good life will pay off, and that's why I'm here. In a foreign country thousands of miles away from home, taking my chances at success in something I'm genuinely passionate about, even if the bar feels too high sometimes. |
” |
At the age of 5, he was adopted by a social worker after taking interest in him. Joining their family, he gained two older siblings, his brother Marcus and his older sister Eunica, both of which are now Australian nationals working in medical research. In a podcast with internet personality Anton Lacsamana, he described his relationship with his siblings as "cordial", despite living thousands of miles away from each other for most of their lives. When he was 7, the family moved to the suburban city of Parañaque, where they had Korean expatriate neighbors who would constantly blast catchy foreign music during the afternoons. During Christmas of 2007, he was gifted a vinyl of the art pop album Retrogression by South Korean musician Park Danho, which he credited to have sparked his interest in music.
In February 2009, Xavier's mother passed away during a boating accident, leaving him and his family severely devastated. He recalled that period of time as particularly dark, as he frequently fought with his siblings and constantly threatened to run away from home. Around the same time, he started getting into art as a form of escapism, constantly writing poems for himself and making artworks that were indiscernible but representative of his emotions. He would also jump from one interest to another, which included science fiction, occultism, and Thai culture. He graduated from high school in the early 2010s and applied for multiple universities, but was only able to pass in one, where he took up organizational communication. He described his college years as a mixed bag of "binge eating, constant misery from the idea of being molded to be a corporate slave, and escapism through daydreams, media consumption, and getting wasted." Despite multiple attempts to drop out due to his poor academic performance, he was able to successfully graduate, but struggled finding a job and fitting in within a competitive corporate sector. In between internships, he worked a series of odd jobs, which included being a drive-thru cashier, a stock clerk, a freelance writer, a janitor, a shoe repairman, and even a customer service staff. He tried his best to avoid family or high school reunions as he was embarrassed by the state of his life, and developed nihilistic attitudes because of it.
In 2017, Xavier landed a normal desk job at a media company, but only stayed there until late 2018 due to layoffs. In March 2019, after being recruited by connections, he somehow managed to find himself in the world of acting, where he starred in indie film The Abandoned Boy, a low-budget picture exploring the relationship between a security guard and a massage worker. He continued to make more friends within the fringes of the entertainment industry, one of which was a musician who eventually taught him how to play the basics of certain instruments as well as use a popular music production software. In October 2019, Xavier independently released his first mixtape Nakakahilo, consisting of three-tracks in which he both sung and rapped in Filipino. In November 2019, he sent out his demo songs to a local musician who was looking to form a band, but plans fell through as the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in and disrupted the music industry.
Career[]
2021[]
In April 2021, Xavier was revealed as a contestant on MBS reality talent competition SOL Puzzle, which featured 28 contestants with music industry experience competing in individual and group performances for a chance to debut in six-member project supergroup, SOLVIZ, which was meant to promote domestically and internationally. Around the same time, he signed with record label 24D Entertainment to represent and manage his activities in South Korea. Initially, Xavier faced challenges due to language barriers, ageism, and fabricated scandals, ranking 18th place in the show's early rankings. However, he quickly gained attention as a polarizing and charismatic figure, due to his unfiltered personality, humor, and candid commentary that seemed calculated and entertaining. His presence was credited with boosting viewership, as his unpredictable behavior sparked discourse and reactions among audiences. Despite being target of continuous hate trains and evil editing, Xavier amassed significant support from fans in both South Korea and internationally, as he capitalized on his "antihero" image and eventually held a landslide victory where he placed 1st with 567,394 votes.
Following his debut with SOLVIZ, Xavier immediately began to expand his career as a musician, working as a songwriter and producer for several up-and-coming artists. In October 2021, he contributed to labelmate and rapper Heera's debut mixtape 1992112, producing four tracks namely “Spontaneous,” “C’est La Vie,” “Attachment Issues,” and “Government Conspiracy.” The mixtape received critical acclaim and was later recognized as one of the year's standout K-pop releases. As a result of his continuously acclaimed work, Xavier unexpectedly won the Daesang for Creator of the Year at the 2021 MBS Artist Awards, becoming the first foreign musician to win a Daesang in the entirety of the award show's history.
2022-2023[]

Luna in 2022
In February 2022, Xavier Luna wrote and composed "Fever", the comeback single for his boy group SOLVIZ. The track, which showed a mature and vocal-centric R&B sound, was deliberately designed by Luna to be distinct from the EDM and chant-heavy songs of nearly all rookie boy groups at the time. As a result, the single became a massive commercial success, becoming a sleeper hit that eventually earned the distinction of becoming the first 4th generation boy group song to reach #1 on the Circle Digital Chart. In May 2022, Luna released his first solo single titled "A Person", which served as the opening soundtrack to the MKM Media thriller series Acid Trip. Over the summer, he continued working for other K-pop groups, being revealed as a songwriter, composer, and arranger for MATRYIX's second studio album The Calefaction, PURPLE TWILIGHT's second single album Purple Mirror, and C9PID's debut studio album New C9PID, the latter of which yielded the chart-topping single "Full Circle".
In August 2022, Xavier made his official solo debut as an artist with the single "Blazing Flame", a soul-inspired adult contemporary track that he wrote in 2019. The song was first revealed during his special performance for rock musician Park Danho's set at the 2022 COOLAHPALOOZA Alternative Music Festival, with a video of the live performance going viral through word-of-mouth on social media. "Blazing Flame" peaked at number one in South Korea, making him the first Southeast Asian artist to top the chart. The song maintained top ten positions for 44 consecutive weeks, becoming one of the biggest hits of 2022 in the country. In September, he collaborated with veteran hip-hop duo Arriviste on the song "If It Means Anything". At the year end 2022 MBS Artist Awards, Xavier was nominated for four awards, winning his second Creator of the Year trophy and also taking Best R&B/Soul Recording and Best Live Performance for "Blazing Flame".
In June 2023, Xavier was announced as one of the new MCs for music show K-Pop On Top alongside Dami of girl group Playground. At the year-end 2023 MBS Artist Awards, he won his third Creator of the Year award, breaking the record for the most wins in the category; his portfolio during the year included songwriting and production work on Ahn Minhui's Gold Society, SRSN's Reines De L'Amour Éternel, Meita's Scene II: Afterparty, and Dahyun's Eyes On Me. On December 23, 2023, Xavier featured on "Hot and Cold", a holiday-themed collaboration single with Jin Hyunah, Jaesang of R3THR0, and MiNNy. The song peaked at 27 on the Circle Digital Chart.
2024[]

Luna in 2024
On January 1, 2024, Xavier released his first side project Asi9, a nine-track collaborative electronic music album with musician {TBA}. Its lead single, "Do Flower Boys Dream of Utopian Cities?", featuring Jay Kang of R3THR0, was surprise pre-released in late December and became his second number one single in South Korea. The album received acclaim from critics, who praised Luna's production work and its liminal atmosphere. From late January to March, Xavier paused all of his solo activities to embark on Expédition Solarian International Tour, the first world tour of SOLVIZ, which later disbanded in April.
Following SOLVIZ's disbandment, Xavier immediately announced the founding of Awkward Boy Syndrome, a project band consisting of ex-groupmate Charlie Kwon, Choi Changwook of ix-cite, Lee Jiyong of IMMORPHIA, and Kim Jungwon of SOLUNEX. They made their debut on May 6, 2024 with the extended play (EP) Clear Skies Over Westwood. Its lead single, "Midnight Escapism", was entirely written and produced by Luna, later becoming a number-one single that was praised by music critics for its shoegaze sound.
In spring 2024, Xavier starred in comedy web drama Camp, where he played the role of Daniel Tan, the eccentric camp director of Jeju Arts & Wildness Experience Camp (JAWEC). In June 2024, he featured in soloist Bae Yeju's dance pop single "Make You Mine", which was received well by music critics. In August 2024, he featured on "Inside The Fire", a song by EMERGE member and global star Joo Yubin that served as the title track for the latter's debut studio album Glassless. The song became his third top 5 chart hit in South Korea, debuting at #2. 2024 was Luna's biggest year in the award show season, receiving four solo nominations at the Hangang Artistry Awards, while his band Awkward Boy Syndrome received five nominations.
2025-2026[]
On May 12, 2025, Xavier released his debut studio album Impossible Prince!, which was preceded by the release of singles "Might Never Do This Again", featuring Taran of khaos, and "Antiretro", which featured junior artists DEC, Chae Dahee, and Seoyeon as guest vocalists.
In the second half of 2025, Xavier had his first major acting role since 2019 after starring as half-Korean journalist Sim Jong-seong in the investigative thriller film One-Hit Worship, which centered around a struggling newspaper's investigative unit as they probed into the human trafficking practices of a conservative Christian cult participated in by entertainment industry figures. Luna told Star News that despite the risky and sensitive nature of the topic, he personally auditioned for the film after receiving the opportunity to do so, saying: "One of the pressing issues of society that I have always been fascinated about are religious cults, because it's both interesting and terrifying how the human devotion to faith can be weaponized to manipulate masses and institutions. As someone who aspired to be an investigative journalist when I was younger, I tried my best to channel a mixed sense of fear and determination into my character, Sim Jeong-seong." The film received acclaim from both domestic and international film critics, with praise particularly being directed towards the performance of Luna, who at the time was considered more as a singer than a prolific actor. Xavier continued his acting ventures after playing a supporting character in the television drama Flock Hanging By A Thread, which is set in a post-apocalyptic South Korea.
Artistry[]

Musician Park Danho has been credited by Luna for significantly influencing his public persona.
Xavier describes veteran rock and metal musician Park Danho as his role model in the music industry, citing his risk-taking and articulateness as someone he would like to emulate in his development as a public figure. In the months leading up to his solo debut in August 2022, he became a protégé of Danho, who mentored him in the aspects of producing and performing. He also named late Korean ballad/R&B singers Chun Jihye and Ahn Sang-won as performers he tried to emulate during his stages, learning about their music through the older. In 2024, he credited Lady Gaga as a formative influence that made him consider being a pop singer, being fascinated by how she deconstructs the world of fame through her music and public persona. Musically, he doesn't identify anything as his primary influences, claiming that "he takes inspiration from everything, whether it be a generic pop song on the radio or a long-forgotten vintage record that only chronically online music nerds know about."
Musical style[]
Xavier's voice has been classified as a tenor, with a range spanning approximately B2 to B5. He claims to have never done professional music training until becoming an idol, with his only experience as a vocalist being part of his high school's choir for a year. His voice has been described by critics as "vulnerably soft", "emotionally charged", and "heartfelt", contrasting with male vocalists with more powerful and deep voices that are generally considered masculine.

Xavier Luna's brand endorsements
Solo artists from across the K-pop industry have cited Xavier as an artistic influence and a role model, including Chae Dahee [1], DEC [2], Kwon Janghun, and Seoyeon [3]. K-pop group members that have mentioned him as a favorite artist include Donghyuck of EPHEMERA [4], Iris of NAIAD [5], Seo Hyunwon of ELECTRIX [6], HAN.SEUL of HEART2HEART [7], Taerin of MAHINAz [8], Angela Voon of ALLERIA [9], Park Gyuhan of FRESH DAY [10], Doobyul of DANGL1NG5 [11], Hyejin of JΣПΣЯΛƬIӨП [12], Seunghyeon of ANP, and Tatsumaru Kairi of NEOFLARE [13]. Overtime, Xavier has also used his influence to mentor new artists, the most notable of which is Carboncopyluv member Isaiah Myung, who he personally chose as his opening act for his first solo concert.
Xavier Luna's unusual popularity among the general public as a foreign idol and association with weird or eccentric visuals and music has attracted the likes of conspiracy theorists and coordinated hate campaigns. In August 2024, a South Korean Evangelical pastor alleged that Xavier Luna was involved in Satanic rituals which he uses to sabotage his rivals, and was the descendant of a demon man named Celeztiel, using his upbringing of being found in a cemetery and having unidentifiable biological parents as evidence. Furthermore, the priest alleged that his band, Awkward Boy Syndrome, was meant to be shortened to "ABYSS" and therefore inciting its listeners to "join the abyss of Lucifer's realm." Though widely regarded as baseless and conspiratorial, the claims sparked a meme in which Korean netizens would "thank Celeztiel" every time they have a blessing in order to ward off any potential misfortune. Despite the quick spread of the conspiracy especially among haters and netizens who disliked him, Xavier did not directly comment on the rumors, instead making subtle jokes about it in some of his performances or livestreams. In an exclusive interview with MBS for his debut album, he said:
"Maybe I am the son of Celeztiel the Demon, maybe I'm not. Personally, I don't believe I'm a malevolent supernatural entity, but if I really was, it hasn't seemed to have caused a terrible experience for anyone in my life? I know, most artists would release lengthy press statements about defamation right away, but here's the thing: Why should I waste my time trying to convince these grifters and their herd that I'm not a demon? My fans don't care and nether do I. They seem to be occupied with waiting for my music, and I'm focusing on giving them exactly that."
Personal life[]
Xavier lives in Seoul, South Korea, though regularly flies back to the Philippines every year to be with his friends and family. While he was born and baptized Roman Catholic like the vast majority of the Philippine population, he has disassociated himself from the Church since his teenage years due to their traditionally conservative views. He describes his relationship with spirituality as "continuously evolving", influenced by indigenous beliefs of his adoptive grandparents: "I believe there are deities and an afterlife for sure, but I'll never know what lies beyond our empirical world until I actually cease to live."
Activism[]
In October 2023, Xavier, who was participating in a fashion event in Manila, Philippines, wore a Barong tagalog splattered in red colored paint. The bloodied shirt drew both confusion and interest from netizens on social media, in which he later revealed that it was a Halloween outfit but also a personal statement against the normalization of police brutality and extrajudicial violence in the Philippines in the last ten years. In October 2024, Xavier reposted a statement by an environmental rights organization condemning mining operations in ancestral lands across the Philippines. In the 1st Hangang Entertainment Awards, Xavier wore a multicolored suit created out of plastics and other waste that were imported in multiple Southeast Asian countries, criticizing how developed countries dump their garbage in the Global South while having the tendency to put the blame on them for pollution and other environmental issues.
