The Other World is the Special Feature of July 2023

The Other World is a South Korean reality competition program created by MBS. The premise of the show involves ten male K-pop dancers and rappers competing against each other to showcase their vocal abilities.

Concept and format[]

The 4th generation of boy groups currently stand in a stable yet complicated place in the K-pop industry. While they are known for their massive international popularity and powerful performances that leave an impact on the stage, the new generation of male idols are subject to numerous negative assumptions brought on by observations by netizens. Among these are the perception that 4th gen boy groups mostly specialize only in dance and rap, which has led to vocal talent being compromised and left to a few vocalists. The Other World aims to disprove such stereotypes, by showcasing various members of different boy groups who despite not being main vocalists, are still talented singers but were never given the platform to show it due to the responsibilities brought on by their primary positions.

Episode 1[]

TOW1

The first four minutes delve into the rise of the fourth generation of boy groups in K-pop, documenting the ambitions and genuine sentiments shared by the ten contestants, many of which feel like they have potential singing talent that has been underutilized. The show aims to disprove the harmful, surface-level stereotypes by allowing them to express another side of their artistry as vocalists that their fans have never seen before.

The show officially begins as the contestants arrive at the studio one by one. The first is Cheolsun, the talented choreographer and dancer of million-seller boy group REVICE. He immediately brings lively energy and humor to the set, sitting towards his assigned throne. He sees ten keywords of goofy adjectives and references, and realizes that it represents each one of them. Keyword #2, “Pizza Boy”, glows next, as Juyeon of anticipated rookie boy group ELECTRIX arrives and the two get to know each other. Keyword #3 is “Old-Fashioned Child”, and a cute boy shuffles onto his throne like a penguin. It is Seungmin of boy group REM and formerly of ORCHID. Time passes by the minutes as the next two arrive: “Height: 6.3 ft, Ability to confront a cockroach: 1 ft” is Taehyun of Opal, and “20-year-old baby” is Kyungjun of monster rookie boy group MERAVI, both of which finally reunite affectionately for the first time since SOL Puzzle. Juyeon gets shocked after finding out that Seungmin is way older than him despite his young face. Keyword #6 is “Like Dancing”, referencing the 2022 Yuki song of the same name. Mireu of After School Club walks in with intense charisma and sharp visuals, which soften up all of a sudden as he introduces himself.

MAHINAz’s Alekk walks in next, with Keyword #7 “Fashion King”. He introduces himself in Korean and English and miserably fails in trying to do aegyo. Keyword #8 is “Survival Show Connoisseur”, and SOLVIZ’s Yul shows up with a parody of AKB48’s “Heavy Rotation”. A reunion of traumatized Star Maker X 101 contestants takes place, and Yul wonders if another one is coming up. The final two keywords take place, both of which read “Survivor On Top”. Two figures emerge from the mist-filled opening of the set, and everyone is left genuinely shocked. Hyunsu of H6bble and Kichiro of SOLUNEX, respective first placers of their groups, walk in with elegant outfits, reflecting the contrasting light-dark concepts they have as rival project groups. They each introduce professionally and settle down, completing the batch of contestants.

20 minutes later, the MC, Miyeon of (G)I-DLE, walks in and everyone screams in starstruckness. Miyeon smiles and reads through the show’s details. The 10 contestants will compete through five or six evaluation rounds, in order to achieve the title of The Other World’s Grand Champion. 4 contestants will be able to compete as finalists for the Grand Champion title. The Prequel Mission commences, which while not being counted yet in their cumulative points, may help them in the following round one way or another. Each of them were tasked to prepare a 1-minute performance that will showcase their live vocal abilities as their official introduction into the great competition. The performance will use a song from their solo or group discography, and may even be self-composed. Each contestant has a voting button on their throne’s armrest, in which they are tasked to press UP if they think the contestant is one step better than them and may be serious competition that will challenge their chances of winning the show.

The second episode opens with the ten contestants on their way to the MBS studio for their first ever competitive mission. Some arrive in their expensive company vehicles, meanwhile, Alekk and Kyungjun are particularly seen arriving in an orange Seoul taxi cab after arriving last minute from a visit to the local beach. A small car pulls into the driveway ten minutes later, as SOLVIZ’s Yul and SOLUNEX’s Kichiro steps out of a car whose driver turns out to be Kyler Kim, treating them like children with paper bags of lunch in hand. As the ten contestants gather, the Quintuple Battle has been revealed, an individual one-versus-one match. They are divided into ten pairings who will be singing different songs, and will be evaluated by two teams: The Voice Guardians and the Voice Listeners, consisting of a 100-person live audience and international spectators through Zoom. The song choices are:

Practice Highlights:

  • Yul vs Kyungjun: Yul gets anxious about his performance after the mishap during the Prequel Mission, but works hard to ensure that Solariz and the other audiences will only see the best side of him on stage.
  • Kichiro vs Juyeon: Kichiro receives praise from the Vocal Guardians, who paid a visit to the ten contestants during their practice time! His singing voice did feel like a male version of Noa's original delivery of the song. Juyeon opted for an "indie boy" concept for his cover of Workaholic; during the last minute, he decided to play the guitar live while singing rather than have an instrumental playing or another person doing the job.
  • Cheolsun vs Hyunsu: Both Cheolsun and Hyunsu decided to stick to a rock arrangement of both songs, but decide to have different interpretations of the "emo" theme. Cheolsun decides to start his performance by briefly playing the piano as the opening.
  • Alekk vs Taehyun: Alekk's fluency in English puts him at an advantage and his familiarity with Beyoncé songs makes the job easier for him! However, he also personally admits that the song is out of his normal range and pushes him past his comfort zone. Taehyun, on the other hand, seems to struggle the hardest among the ten contestants. He has not listened to the song before and is only learning it for the first time, and the high notes prove a huge obstacle. His countless failed attempts to deliver it perfectly cause him to start crying. Kyungjun rushes to comfort him and scolds him in a playful way.
  • Mireu vs Seungmin More known due to his powerful dance skills and pretty yet mature visual that has captivated many international fans, Mireu is worried that he might not be able to completely excel at performing a cute song like "Cheer Up". However, he is still determined to cover it properly without changing the atmosphere too much. Seungmin, known as a girl group connoisseur, finds covering a C9PID song within his lane. However, issues begin when he begins having problems with his voice, and he gets very anxious that he will be unable to deliver his singing abilities on the actual day.

Episode 4[]

TOWUnitBattle

The 10 members arrive into the set for their Second Mission, the Unit Match, in which each of the 10 contestants are divided into five duos. There will be two battles for the Unit Match. One will be the 2v2 battle, in which two duos compete against each other. The winning duo will receive a vote benefit of 300 votes, an increase from the first round. On the other hand, the second battle will be a 2v2v2 battle, in which three duos compete against each other. As they will be more disadvantaged due to the likeliness of a wider distribution of votes, they are compensated with a boost of 500 votes for the winning team. The song choices are:

  • 2v2:
    • [ FIFTY FIFTY - CUPID (2023) ]
    • [ Billie Eilish - Wish you were gay (2019) ]
  • 2v2v2
    • [ Tan (Life5) - Don't Lecture Me (2023) ]
    • [ WOODZ - I Hate You (2022) ]
    • [ FINEKIZ - Man in Love (2013) ]

Cheolsun, Hyunsu ("R2BBLE") "I Hate You" WOODZ 786
Juyeon, Mireu ("FINE KIDZ") "Our Way to Go" FINEKIZ 811
  • Highlights:
    • Team One Hundred performance: Kyungjun and Seungmin emerge from a prop house and open the mailbox in front of them. They see a pink gift box with the label "CUPID'S ROMANTIC DELIVERY". They excitedly open the package and become strongly disappointed upon seeing nothing but a broken heart. The lights momentarily turn dark and the song starts with a slow R&B-esque arrangement. Seungmin does the popular "I'm feeling lonely, oh I wish I'd find a lover that could hold me" part while Kyungjun inserts the rap part of the original Korean version into their performance of the Twin Version.
    • Team Weather Whether performance: The set is simple, with them sitting on two stools while fake rain pours in the background to depict a lonely stormy evening. Both Alekk and Taehyun's unique vocal colors shine in the performance. They also get praises for delivering the emotions of the song strongly. Taehyun sings the lyrics like a native English speaker.
      • Alekk breaks into tears after finding out their team has won. In the confessionals, Alekk acknowledged that he is the lowest ranking contestant and is a lot of points away from the cut-off. However, he doesn't want to seem desperate to survive and wants to prove that he is worthy of ranking higher despite being the youngest contestant.
    • Team Double Sunny Side performance: The 1950s-themed performance begins with Kichiro and Yul in a fake dining room, playing as sons being scolded by their father (played by an extra man). After the man leaves, they begin singing the intro lines, followed by the song itself. They are seen walking into a dressing room set, where both boys take turns trying on expensive outfits while the other sings. For the second half of the song, Kichiro and Yul crashes a formal ballroom in fedoras and mascaras, encircling around the tables of attendees while singing their lines. During the final chorus, the entire set becomes chaotic as they dance along with the two boys. The performance ends with a classic polite bow.
      • Rehearsals: Kichiro was very eager to recover from his loss in the first round; he intentionally aimed for "Don't Lecture Me" as it is the most vocally challenging song of all the five choices, and therefore gives him the opportunity to show the maximum of his capabilities. Yul shares a similar sentiment; his lines in SOLVIZ songs tend to be the easier ones to sing. By taking risks and leaving his comfort zone, he wants to prove that he is also a capable vocalist with massive potential just like his other groupmates.
    • Team R2BBLE performance: The performance has an emo concept, with a 20-second black and white introduction that is reminiscent of a silent film. The storyline portrays them as two men seeking for revenge against an evil individual who betrayed them.
      • Rehearsals: Cheolsun and Hyunsu feel awkward at first because they literally just competed against each other in the first round, but inevitably after hours of practice they becoming comfortable enough with each other to start bickering. Cheolsun discovers that he is pretty good at acting like a villain, and cracks evil edit jokes.
    • Team FINE KIDZ performance: The two are wearing identical round glasses and cotton sweaters with a red rose hanging from the pocket, presenting a soft, boy-next-door version of themselves that resembles the main concept of the original artist. The judges and other contestants alike are gagged by Juyeon's high note in the final chorus. The audience screams at Mireu's charming wink during the end of the stage, before they both form a heart for the ending fairy.

  • Highlights:
    • Dark Dystopia
      • Alekk: Alekk's stage for "28 Reasons" features a psycho concept, with an aesthetic reminiscent of hell.
      • Juyeon: Juyeon's stage features a dystopian scifi concept, with a post-apocalyptic city backdrop.
    • Pure Angelic
      • Yul: Yul goes all out on stage with his angelic visual, including the signature retro standing mic which he spins and swings smoothly throughout his dance. He also includes his own original rap, which impresses the other contestants, as well as a dance break inspired by traditional Korean dances. In the end, he manages to pull off the multi-layered high notes of the final chorus, and blows flower petals to the audience as the cherry on top.
      • Seungmin: Seungmin presents himself as a fairy, with a French beret and cute plastic wings that are reminiscent of the Y2K style that AURA Creative artists are known for. Clouds dot the background with fog covering the stage, depicting him floating in the sky. He flashes his smile throughout the performance.
      • Both stages receive the loudest screams from the audience during the entire mission
    • Fresh Summer
      • Hyunsu: Hyunsu is in a life guard outfit (think Thrill Ride Juyeon) in a pool setting. His muscular arms are revealing and the gays are gagged. However, his visuals alone are only part of the fun performance which got a lot of the audience moving as he danced with the many backup dancers in his stage.
      • Kyungjun: Kyungjun presented a unique remix of "Love Like Utopia" that reinvents the song to trendier sounds, with some parts straight out of a PinkPantheress song. He wears a colorful outfit that depicts him as a school boy, with the plot being a student heading straight to the beach to celebrate after the last day of classes. His performance begins outside the studio where he exits a school bus, ditches his backpack, and walks into the studio.
    • Retro Nostalgia
      • Taehyun: During the practice scenes, Taehyun opened up about his pressure to do even better to stay in 1st place and live up to the massive support he is receiving. He further proves that he deserves his votes during this performance of "Dynamite", which features a 1950s-1960s concept that starts with him in a diner and ends with him jumping onto the roof of a vintage car with ease and pulling off the more vocal-heavy parts with stability.
      • Cheolsun: The audience and evaluators are surprised by Cheolsun's initially questionable song choice, which he actually intended to use on purpose. He figures out that a regular retro performance will not be enough to gain attention from voters, and decides to be risky. However, his interpretation of "34+35" is more classy, with the song being given a new jazz mix. Some judges feel like the execution could have been more powerful or outstanding, but nonetheless, he pulled it off fine.
    • Mature Elegance
      • Kichiro: After receiving positive comments and attention for his performance during the "Don't Lecture Me" stage, Kichiro saw it as a signal that he should keep on serving. and he did. His stage is decorated with dark flowers, complimenting his styling that day. He pulls off the sensual choreography staying true to the original and slays Minah's high note down.
      • Mireu: Mireu uses an unexpected song choice, as "Platonic Love" is typically more associated with the retro concept. However, he explains that he wants to prove that a song can be portrayed in a different flavor if done flawlessly. His mature and flawless visuals definitely shined during his performance, with the audience keeping their eyes on him; he is wearing a black suit with a fedora that partly hides his face (like Juyeon during the "Bad Guy" cover), giving him a mysterious yet hot vibe. However, he definitely is beyond just his looks, as he is able to deliver the song with live vocals that remained consistent while dancing.
