Over 2500 applications were recieved, with 150 applicants passing to the second round of auditions. This round was a live audition, held via video calls throughout August. Of the 150 applicants, 15 were selected to move on to the final round of auditions - a two-week-long training camp culminating in a final live audition. The 15 finalists were: Tachibana Uraha, Suzuhane Megumi, Muto Minami, Ichitani Yuzuka, Kishigami Rei, Suzuki Yui, Hattori Wakana, Yokogawa Shiori, Ichinose Sachika, Inoue Saya, Koike Hinako, Igarashi Ayumi, Nagaki Mizuno, Suzuki Sora, and Aizawa Kanna.
The training camp started on September 2, 2019, and the final live audition was held on September 18. On September 13, the first episode of TV program Lucky Kitsune aired. The program was a 6-episode documentary series about the audition. During the final episode, aired on October 18, the final lineup was announced, with all 15 finalists becoming part of the lineup. As well, the group name was revealed to be Scarlet Kitsune.

Indies Debut[]

On November 6, a few weeks after the final lineup reveal, it was announced that due to contract complications Ichinose Sachika and Koike Hinako would not become part of Scarlet Kitsune.
Scarlet made their indies debut as a 13-member group with the single "Maji da Lucky Chance!", which was the theme song for the audition. The single was released on December 4, 2019 with the coupling song "Kasuka na Kimochi".
Starting January 2020, Scarlet Kitsune began broadcasting their first weekly radio show, "Scarlet Kitsune no Lucky Showtime!", on Tokyo FM.
The release of their second indies single, "Tonari no Panya-san", was scheduled for March 2020, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the single was pushed back to May 16. The song was a tie-up for a series of CMs for Yamazaki. Scarlet Kitsune themselves also appeared in the CMs.
Their final indies single, "Tsutaete", was released on September 19, 2020. During their online release event for the single, it was announced that their major debut was confirmed for 2021.
