SRSN (Hangul: 사랑소녀; also known as Love Girls or SaSo) is a 13-member girl group under Label LG, a sub-label of Olympic Records. They debuted on March 12, 2012 with the mini album HEARTS UP!.
Originally debuting under TSTAR Entertainment, the group signed with Olympic Records following the nullification of their contracts.
History[]
2011-2012: Formation and Pre-Debut[]
The first priority of the newly formed TSTAR Entertainment in 2011 was to debut a K-Pop act to gain a foothold in the industry. What initially began as discussions regarding the formation of a boy group quickly shifted in the direction of a female artist. The shift began initially due to internal arguments over which direction to go; founder Cha Soo-Kyung saw an opportunity to debut a girl group whilst her board of directors heavily favoured a boy group debut. At the cost of appeasing all, it was slated that the girl group would debut at the nearest possible convenience and the boy group would have extensive planning and preparation contributed towards their debut.
Despite being the least preferred of the two, the brainchild that would become SRSN still had some ambition tethered to it. TSTAR Entertainment intended wholly to shake up the industry and debut a one of a kind group. The theory that persisted was that if the group debuted with a bold and unique enough appeal, little attention would need to be given management wise as fame and fortune would simply be attracted to it.
Although the idea of a dual concept had been pencilled in from the beginning stages, it largely referred to the prospective boy and girl group as being sibling groups of sorts; connected in ways that encouraged fans of each act to listen to the other. It was decided upon the launch of domestic and international auditions that the dual concept would come to be realised in only the girl group - that being the marketable uniqueness the company sought. During August 2011, the names SRSN (Love Girls) and MWSN (Hate Girls) were trademarked.
Cha Soo-Kyung saw the vision of two girl groups that would both have a rivalry with one another yet still work together. Influenced by popular American teen shows such as Victorious and iCarly and cartoon Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, she envisioned that each group could pertain to a different audience whilst still appealing to all when they came together in their 'supergroup' form. A final name, MESN (Girls of the Heart), was trademarked in anticipation for the groups. It was set that each group would have twelve members, meaning the conjoined unit would consist of twenty-four girls.
The selection process of the twenty-four girls began as soon as TSTAR Entertainment began to officially sign trainee contracts. Girls were separated into two teams - 'Team L' and 'Team H' - dependent on which concept the company believed they fit more. The groups were fluid, aimed with the task of producing the most optimal line-ups. The teams were in a constant state of practice upon signing their trainee contracts, all with the goal of a first half debut in 2012.
The plans to debut the twenty-four member MESN began in October 2011. At that point, twenty-four girls had been placed into the two respective teams and were working hard towards debut. Social media accounts created for both SRSN and MWSN were posting clips of the members, beginning to generate interest. CEO Cha Soo-Kyung was challenged by her board of directors once more if the process of debuting so many girls in what was perceived as a convoluted way was worth it. The conflict reached a stalemate as neither side had intentions of backing down. The strife from the top of the company began to trickle down with many girls intentionally breaching their contracts, paying the fine to break them or simply leaving. The dwindling number of girls was used advantageously by the board of directors, forcing Cha Soo-Kyung to debut only one of the groups. Choosing the cuter, poppy and more innocent concept over the more rebellious one, plans for MWSN and MESN were scrapped in lieu of SRSN.
The twelve girls who had stayed with the company - MeiLin, Nayoung, Yeonji, Sakura, Autumn, BaoZhai, Eunkyung, Kumiko, Harin, Chaerin, Mina and ChangYing - were folded into the singular pre-debut team of SRSN in December 2011. The social media presence of the group decreased in the following months, both as a means of recuperating resources and redirecting them into SRSN's formal debut, but also as a means of preparing the girls for the final stages of pre-debut.

2012: Debut with HEARTS UP!, All For You & Breakthrough With I WANT[]

SRSN's Original Logo
In a six week interval from January 30 until March 5, the members were revealed in pairs. On March 6, it was announced that the girls would be debuting with the mini-album HEARTS UP!. The concept of the album was more aligned to the image of MWSN rather than SRSN; the company had decided that the alternate approach to the name and the expectations of the public was one that they were willing to gamble with.
The mini-album was released on March 12, formally marking the group's debut. Their debut showcase was held on the same day at the Olympic Park SK Handball Arena in Seoul. The album performed well on the charts, selling 10,000 copies in the first week and peaking at #7 on the Gaon Albums Chart. The lead single of the album, "I HEART YOU" peaked at #5 on the Gaon Digital Singles Chart. Although the debut was seen as a commercial success and succeeded in gaining the foothold TSTAR Entertainment was so desperate for, critics lambasted the concept and musical direction of the song, feeling as if it 'failed to live up to the expectations one would create when seeing the name SRSN.' Others identified that while the song 'wasn't by any means a bad song, there appears to be a disconnect between the group's image and their debut single.' SRSN ended their group promotions on April 22. Due to the attention their debut was able to generate, many of the members were able to star on variety shows in between comebacks.
On August 10, TSTAR Entertainment released the teasers for the group's first comeback, the mini-album All For You. Much like the previous album, All For You was more aligned to the image of MWSN, albeit it was slightly airier as the company took notes from the critical response of HEARTS UP!. From August 11 until August 30, teasers were uploaded of the members before the album itself was released on September 4. The album's eponymous title track, "All For You" was released simultaneously onto YouTube and Naver. Commercially, All For You was received similarly to its predecessor. The album itself peaked at #6 on the Gain Albums Chart with 35,000 copies sold whilst the lead single, "All For You" peaked at #5 on the Gaon Digital Singles Chart. The music video for "All For You was the group's first MV to receive 10 million views on YouTube - a feat achieved in the first three days. With the girls' popularity only increasing, TSTAR Entertainment ensured they had more frequent appearances on variety shows both as the group or individually. The group ended promotions for the album on October 5 with critics praising the brighter approach taken.
It was announced on October 15, only ten days following the conclusion of the ALL FOR YOU promotions, that SRSN was preparing for their final comeback of the year. Internally, SRSN's musical direction experienced a shift as TSTAR Entertainment noticed a vacancy for a poppier, cuter girl group sound and thus adjusted SRSN's music style accordingly. From a period between October 31 and November 20, teasers were uploaded of the girls alongside MV teasers. The single album I WANT! was released alongside its music video for the lead track of the same name on November 25. When asked to describe the feeling of the comeback, producer Ham Yang-Jun referred to it as being 'spunky enough to remind fans of the past two singles' yet 'a shift towards the fully realised SRSN.' The shift in musical direction proved to be a success; "I WANT!" peaked at #1 on five music charts, notably the Gaon Digital Singles Chart, the K-Pop Hot 100 Chart, the MelOn Daily Chart and Billboard's Digital World Singles Chart. The album generated 60,000 sales within the first week. The group conducted extended promotions for the song, concluding them in mid-January 2013 with the grand total of 7 earnt music show wins.
2013: Addition of Fleur & Dalyeon, CONFESS ALREADY!, SHOW ME SOME LOVE, ChangYing's Hiatus & COLD[]
During the period of December 2012 and February, the group attended various award shows. At four award shows - Melon Music Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, the Korean Music Awards and the MAMA Awards - the group won 'Rookie of the Year.' The group also won the accolade of 'Best Music Video' for "All For You" at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
On February 27, it was announced that SRSN would be adding two new members to turn the group into a fourteen-membered line-up. Both of the trainees selected, Fleur Jaegal and Phạm Quý Nguyệt, better known by her Korean name Pam Sang-Ah, had previous experience within the industry. Fleur was a member of the short lived girl group TJGIRLS under her Korean name Ahri whilst Dalyeon was a fairly popular trainee at the company. It was confirmed days after the additions to the group that SRSN would be making their comeback in the first quarter of the year.
On March 2, teasers were released that confirmed SRSN's comeback for March 25 with the mini-album CONFESS ALREADY!. From March 3 until March 24, teasers for both the members and the lead single "Confess Already!'s music video were uploaded onto social media. The release built upon the success of its predecessor, cementing SRSN as a growing force to be reckoned with within the industry. The album generated 75,000 sales within the first week, topping the Gaon Album Chart. The lead single, "Confess Already!" earnt 7 music show wins and topped various domestic music charts as well as the Oricon International Singles Chart for the first time. The lead single's music video would be SRSN's first to hot 50 million views on YouTube and the first of their singles to hit 20 million streams on Spotify.
TSTAR Entertainment confirmed in May that the group would be setting their sights towards their first summer comeback that year with a tentative date of June or July. It was revealed in June that the comeback would be with their first album that would be released on July 2, entitled SHOW SOME LOVE!. The album produced the group's first all-kill on the major Korean charts with the both the album itself and the lead single, "KISSY", topping charts. The album produced 356,000 first week sales. The lead single itself, "KISSY", received eight music show wins. The promotional period for the comeback ended on August 4.
On August 5, TSTAR Entertainment announced that maknae ChangYing would be entering a hiatus in order to work on her education. It was promised that she would return in due course and that SRSN supported her endeavours. ChangYing uploaded a handwritten letter to Instagram in which she reassured Cheotsarangs that she would participate in activities where she could and that her hiatus was more promotional based.
On November 18, it was announced that SRSN would be coming back on December 6 with the mini-album Iced Heart with the lead single "COLD". In the month leading to the comeback, the SRSN members spoke frequently about how the song was a different atmosphere for SRSN yet they still promised their signature charisma and lovability. Although the lead single performed slightly below expectations of SRSN on music shows, bagging only five wins, the album and single itself both topped domestic charts. The album reached peak sales of 400,500 in the first week.
2014: Debut of SRSN 100%, IF YOU'RE THERE FOR US, WE'RE HERE FOR YOU, Japanese Debut, ChangYing's Departure & SUMMER LOVE[]
In February, it was confirmed that TSTAR Entertainment would be debuting SRSN's first subunit named SRSN 100%. The members were revealed periodically throughout March that coincided with a YouTube series that showcased the subunit debut process. It was revealed that Cha Soo-Kyung had chosen the members herself and that the line-up initially consisted of five members before being settled to Meilin, Autumn and Eunkyung.
On April 14, SRSN 100%'s debut mini-album, 100% OF YOUR LOVE, was released.
To commemorate the achievement of their YouTube channel reaching 10 million subscribers, SRSN released a thank-you song and music video on May 3 titled "If You're There For Us, We're Here For You. Member ChangYing participated in the recording of the song but was absent from the music video.
On May 17, SRSN made their Japanese debut with the full album SRSN: THE HITS; a compilation of Japanese versions of their Korean title tracks as well as the album's Japanese lead single "Paparazzi". SRSN: THE HITS proved to have similar momentum to its Korean counterparts, selling 450K albums within the first week and peaking at #1 on the Oricon Daily Album Charts. The lead single, "Paparazzi" topped charts in Japan and reached a peak of #3 on various Korean charts. Member ChangYing was absent from the recordings of the music, despite it previously being suggested that she would be able to participate.
ChangYing left the group on June 6, revealed through a simultaneous company announcement and her own handwritten letter being uploaded onto social media. In her letter, ChangYing said the following: "I've wanted to continue on with SRSN. For the past year and a bit, I've been studying back in my homeland, China. Sadly, I can no longer return to SRSN due to problems with my health I do not wish to discuss." TSTAR Entertainment confirmed that they had terminated their exclusive contract with her and they extended their luck for her future endeavours. Cheotsarangs were notably upset by the announcement as, throughout the year of her hiatus, it was suggested that she may return but were understanding all the same.
On June 9, the music video for "KISSY" reached 500M views, in part due to a drive by Cheotsarangs to extend gratitude towards ChangYing.
TSTAR Entertainment announced that SRSN would be making their comeback with the mini-album Summer Love on August 5, through comeback teasers being posted to various social media sites. The album achieved an all-kill 30 minutes after release and the music video for its lead single, "BEACHBALL", received 25M views within the first 24 hours, establishing a new record for SRSN. "BEACHBALL" received 13 music show wins and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Top 200.
During awards season, SRSN won five Artist of the Year awards alongside a Daesang for "BEACHBALL" at the MNET Asian Music Awards.
2015: Group Hiatus, Passing of ChangYing[]
TSTAR Entertainment announced on January 4 that SRSN would be taking a group hiatus for the year, allowing the girls to go back home to their families and keep their mental health in check. It was affirmed that solo activities would be happening and that SRSN 100% would be making a comeback, simply that SRSN as a full group would not have any activities that year.
On May 4, it was announced by ChangYing through Instagram that her health conditions were improving and that she looked forward to returning to the group. TSTAR echoed this sentiment, revealing that they were more than happy to reinstate her place within the group should the conditions be optimal for it.
It was announced on September 7 that ChangYing had passed away. Her family announced that she had passed due to a heart attack and that the proceeding for the funeral would be private. Her family held a private funeral, where they, close friends and SRSN were in attendance. Sasaengs 'ruined' the funeral, though, as they tried to take pictures of SRSN, even pushing ChangYing's family out of the way. 3 people were arrested at the funeral and those 3 were all charged 20000¥. Cheotsarangs, in response to the sasaengs, raised 32,000,000¥ to the charities in Korea that ChangYing was passionate about.
SRSN announced through their SNS that they would be releasing a commemorative song for ChangYing and that their cuts would be extended to both ChangYing's family and charities she was passionate about. On October 5, "Remember" was released and achieved an all-kill within three minutes. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
On December 15, TSTAR announced that SRSN would be embarking on their first world tour throughout the year of 2016, touring over 30 countries and visiting 80 venues. The tour, titled LOVE TRIP: SRSN FIRST WORLD TOUR, was sold out at all venues with tickets being entirely purchased after two minutes.
2016: Love Trip: World Tour, Hollow[]
From February 2 to August 29, SRSN conducted their first world tour.
TSTAR announced that SRSN would be making their comeback on October 20 with their second full album HOLLOW through teasers posted onto their social media. The feeling of the album was a more mature, wizened SRSN with the intention of showing a 'grown-up' side to them. The album performed well domestically, setting the group's highest first week sales at 1.7M and achieving an all-kill within an hour. The lead single "TBA" achieved fifteen music show wins and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
The music video for "BEACH BALL" reached 1 billion views on YouTube on November 6, becoming the first of the group's to do so.
2017: Japanese Comeback & Sakura & Kumiko's Hiatuses[]
On February 18, SRSN made their first Japanese comeback with the single album YOUNG, FREE, LIVING WILD. The song, much like before, showcased a more mature sound for the group. Although the album sold well, selling 546K in its first week, it only peaked at #9 on the Oricon Singles Chart. The lead single, "Young, Free, Living Wild", was fairly popular in other countries, charting on Korean and International charts.
TSTAR entertainment announced on May 9 that members Sakura and Kumiko would be taking a hiatus from group activities to promote in Japan. Sakura revealed she intended to promote as an actress and model whilst Kumiko would be making her solo debut in the third quarter of the year.
The remaining members of SRSN, for the remainder of the year, pursued solo activities.
2018: MAKE YOU[]
In January, TSTAR entertainment confirmed that SRSN would be making their long-awaited comeback sometime during the summer months. They invested heavily into providing hype for the comeback for the next six months, sending the members to various variety shows and increasing the solo activities.
On June 18, the group make their comeback with the mini-album MAKE YOU. The sound was a large deviation for what the general public had come to expect of SRSN even after their shift to more mature songs. Leaning into the growing noise and EDM trend, many critics lambasted the choice as being 'unsuitable for SRSN.' The release experienced a dip in sales, selling only 600K within the first week. The lead single of the album, "Lilith", failed to achieve any wins and peaked #5 on the Naver Chart.
2019: Contract Renewals & MILKSHAKE[]
TSTAR announced in March that the members of SRSN had extended their contracts for an additional three years, stating that they refused to let the falter of the previous comeback mark a decline to SRSN's success and longevity.
On April 20, TSTAR announced that SRSN would be making their first group comeback in nearly a year on May 14 through various teasers. Internally, TSTAR knew that pursuing the darker, more mature sound that they wanted to ease SRSN into would serve as another nail - if not the final one - in the coffin of the group's career. In a bid to ensure something more heartfelt and enjoyable, Cha Soo-Kyung enabled the girls to take part in the creative side of the album. Noticeably, members Harin and Chaerin partook in the composing of the title track under the duo name '2RIN.'
The more traditional SRSN sound proved to be the right decision as the group's third full album, MILKSHAKE, was released. The album achieved 2M sales within the first week, marking it to be the first of the group's to do so. The music video for the lead single, "Pink Flavor", received 65M views within the first 24 hours, setting another new record for the group. "Pink Flavor" also achieved thirteen music show wins and peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200. The single would later receive its first perfect all-kill a week after release.
2020: 1st concert tour, 2nd world tour, 2nd concert tour & cancelled comeback[]
As part of a NYE announcement, TSTAR announced that SRSN would be undertaking a year of tours, outlining that they would embark on a Korean tour, a Japanese tour and a second World tour. In the same announcement, the company made reference to a potential comeback throughout the year but refused to provide any more details.
From February through May, the group embarked on their first Korean tour, titled Loveaholics. The group performed in many of Korea's largest cities with most venues being sold out.
It was first reported by Dispatch that SRSN was gearing for a June comeback based upon the schedules for their remaining tours. Although neither TSTAR or the girls themselves confirmed anything, many Cheotsarangs took the dyeing of hair as indicators that such a rumour was true. Leaks of various demos given to the group throughout the years began to surface leading many to anticipate new music from SRSN. Despite the hype and expectation that was beginning to generate, TSTAR continued to not announce anything and the month of June passed with no new music from the girls.
During the months of July through October, SRSN embarked on their second world tour titled Le Règne De L'Amour. The group visited all five continents and performed in many cities including Los Angeles, NYC, London, Berlin, Sydney and others.
In the final two months of the year, SRSN conducted their 2nd concert tour - this time in Japan - titled The Love Tour. The group performed in many Japanese cities, ending with a finale concert at the Tokyo Dome on December 20.
2021-2022: Unannounced hiatus, 3rd concert tour, 10th anniversary & cancelled 3rd world tour[]
The first half of 2021 proved to be a quiet one for SRSN, both as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic suspending group activities but, additionally, the girls pursuing solo endeavours. The only activities they did conduct together were variety show appearances.
TSTAR Entertainment announced that the group would embark on their third concert tour and second Korean tour titled The Lovelace. Although billed as a 'Korean tour,' there were many stops in Japan including Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto. It was during this tour that many of the members fainted on stage and where, for some venues, some members were absent entirely. Although the girls tried their best to communicate with their fans, TSTAR provided little details other than confirming if the members were physically well or not.
It was announced in November 2021 that the group would embark on a third world tour, much to the uproar of Korean and International netizens alike. Whilst both asserted that the girls were overworked, Korean netizens argued that they felt as if one of their popular girl groups was being soft-blacklisted by their company and that something nefarious was preventing them from making music. Further backlash was incurred when the dates were revealed as overlapping the group's tenth anniversary, preventing them from undertaking some of the activities they had spoke about at their fifth anniversary such as a special album and a prolonged promotion cycle. Despite the backlash, TSTAR confirmed the concert was titled World Wide Love! and would be held between February and July 2022.
The group began the tour as expected, beginning the first leg in Asia. As with their previous concerts, the venues had been sold out and were full of fans eager to see SRSN. On March 12, the girls held a special concert in Seoul to commemorate their tenth anniversary. Many of the members shared posts on their social media that reflected how happy they were and how they wished the group would continue for many more years.
On April 7, the concert was abruptly cancelled following the group's performance in Amsterdam. The tickets were promptly refunded with little intel as to why the company had made such a decision. No information was revealed with neither the fans nor the public until April 15 wherein TSTAR simply stated that the tour had to be cancelled due to 'unforeseen circumstances' and that it was with regret that they had to do so. Many fans suggested that the group hold a digital concert yet the suggestions fell on deaf ears.
2023: Departure from TSTAR ENTERTAINMENT, Signing With Olympic Records, Creation of Label LG, Return of Sakura & Kumiko, Reines De L'Amour Éternel[]
By 2023, Cha Soo-Kyung had come to view the once passion project of SRSN with fatigue and exhaustion. Although the group retained its reputation as a powerhouse and, if effort was placed correctly, could continue to remain as one of the top girl groups in the industry, she found it increasingly difficult to not consider disbandment and to funnel the resources into new endeavours.
The question as to whether or not SRSN was to be disbanded was the final argument that Cha Soo-Kyung and her board of directors had in SRSN's tenure at TSTAR. Whilst her directors urged her to see the profit that SRSN continued to make, Soo-Kyung remained headstrong in disbanding the girl group at the expiration of their contracts on January 31. With promises of better projects in the future, she was given the blessing to disband the group. Following lengthy discussions with the SRSN members, TSTAR simply told them that they were not in a place to negotiate contract extensions and that all thirteen members would be leaving the roster upon the expiration of their contracts.
On January 10, it was announced that SRSN would be disbanding after eleven years together on January 31 after the expirations of their contracts. The group would release a final single to commemorate their activities and that would, in TSTAR's own words, 'close the book that is the wonderful fairy-tale of SRSN.'
Members Fleur, Dalyeon, Eunkyung, Chaerin, Mina and Nayoung filed to nullify their contracts on January 15. They claimed that they hadn't been given the opportunity to negotiate their contracts in full, nor were they paid the income agreed on despite the group generating enough profit to do so. On January 16, the remaining members - Kumiko, Sakura, MeiLin, BaoZhao, Autumn, Harin and Yeonji - filed for similar nullifications. Though the legal battle was lengthy and publicised, enduring through the acquisition of TSTAR by Highline Media, the girls won; terminating their contracts with TSTAR and keeping rights to the SRSN brand and songs.
On February 16 it was announced that SRSN had found a new home with Olympic Records, home to artists such as HERCULES, BRITOMARTIS and After School Club. The label established the sub-label Label LG to manage the group's activities.
Sakura and Kumiko announced their return to the group on February 19 through Instagram posts.
On February 20, it was announced through teasers posted on social media that SRSN would be making a comeback on March 20. Later the same day, it was confirmed that the group would be releasing their fourth studio album titled Reines De L'Amour Éternel.
2024: Multiple members' hiatuses, The Velvet Kill[]
On March 27, Label LG released a statement announcing the hiatus of members Meilin, Yeonji, Sakura and Kumiko from group activities, effective immediate of the statement's release. It was announced that Yeonji would be taking a hiatus due to health concerns, Sakura and Kumiko would resume activities in their native Japan and Meilin had gotten married and was seeking time off to settle into married life. Shortly after, the label announced that SRSN would promote as a 9-membered group for the time being.
On October 17, it was announced that SRSN would make their comeback on November 15 with their fifth album The Velvet Kill. It was confirmed in a statement by Label LG that Meilin, Yeonji, Sakura and Kumiko would not be participating in the comeback in any capacity.
