SOMANY is a girl group under Connection Entertainment. They debuted on January 16th, 2024, with the mini-album SIDES OF ME.

History[]

2023: Pre-debut[]

On September 13th, 2023, Connection Entertainment posted a star shape with seven spikes to their social media, hinting at an upcoming project for 2024. On September 15th, a strange post was made to the Connection Entertainment trainee social media. The post included a photo with very tacky graphic design and a girl's eyes. The caption was signed by three question marks. Every second day, up until September 27th, another photo was posted with an equally weird caption.
On October 7th, Connection Entertainment announced the opening of SOMANY's social media accounts, and official announced the group. The first member, Park Wonkyung, was announced immediately after. Wonkyung is a former member of TOP ICON Public Audition Challenge group ICONIQ and has participated on Search The Cosmos Season 2. The second member was announced to be Quincy O'hara. Quincy is a former trainee under Wild Melody Entertainment. The third member announced was Yang Shuchen. Shuchen participated in a Chinese survival show in 2021 but was elimiated in the third round. The fourth member to be announced was Stephany Lee, with the fifth member being Perlah Guitierrez. Neither of them were involved in notable predebut activities. The sixth member to be announced was Huang Meiling. Meiling participated in the TOP ICON Public Audition Challenge, Star Maker 101, and WARRIORS. The seventh member to be announced was Oda Koiha. Koiha participated in Star Maker 101 and Search The Cosmos Season 2.
From October to December, the SOMANY members held various livestreams to introduce themselves to the public while they prepared for their debut. On December 18th, Connection Entertainment announced that SOMANY would be debuting in January 2024. Starting on December 31st, 2023, Connection Entertainment began posting concept photos for the debut.

2024: Debut, SIDES OF ME Era, My Own Style Era, Icon (PFP) Era[]

On January 16th, 2024, SOMANY debuted with the mini-album SIDES OF ME and the title track "DallaDallaDalla". The group held their debut showcase on the same day at Blue Square Mastercard Hall in Seoul to a crowd of around 900 fans, with a couple thousand more viewing through a livestream. SIDES OF ME sold 7k copies on its first day, and "DallaDallaDalla" debuted at #99 on the Bugs chart. January 17th saw the start of "DallaDallaDalla" finding its audience, with the song comfortably rising the Bugs and Genie charts and making its debut on the MelOn Daily Chart at #72. Sales were consistent with an influx of new fans interested in the group.
On January 18th, SOMANY received their first win for "DallaDallaDalla" at The Core Music Show. The win caused a chain reaction of chart reversals for all of the songs on SIDES OF ME. B-side track "hopefully", which featured soloist AXENN, skyrocketed to a peak of #12 on the Bugs chart. "DallaDallaDalla" climbed all four major charts, and managed to peak at #7 on the MelOn Daily Chart on January 23rd.
On January 21st, SOMANY received their second win for "DallaDallaDalla" on Hallyumak. On February 2nd, Meiling began hosting her own web show Meiling's Star Journal for SGA TV, which included Quincy and Stephany as guests for the first episode. On the same day, SOMANY's web variety show SOMANY's Side Adventure began airing. On February 3rd, SOMANY received their third win for "DallaDallaDalla" on MBS Rankdown. SOMANY went viral on February 7th after posting a TikTok with the song "I <3 You (featuring Celeztiel)" by YUKI. "DallaDallaDalla" received another win on February 10th at MBS Rankdown. "DallaDallaDalla" got a fourth win on February 17th at MBS Rankdown.
On February 14th, SOMANY released the surprise digital single Unidentified Flying Object as an appreciation gift for their fans. In April, SOMANY announced their fandom name to be SOMUCH, which was chosen because of its similarity to the group's name. On April 22nd, SOMANY released digital single Know Better.
SOMANY released the single album My Own Style on July 17th, with the title track "My Own Heart". The single sold around 15k copies in its first day, marking an increase from their debut. “My Own Heart” did not experience the same success as “DallaDallaDalla”, although it received one music show win on Rankdown @ MBS.
On October 30th, SOMANY released Icon (PFP) and its title track “I=ME”. Also a single album, it continued the group’s rise in first day sales with 19k copies. The title track experienced a similar level of success as “My Own Heart” with a single music show win, although “I=ME” performed significantly better on digital charts.

Etymology[]

The name SOMANY is a combination of the words so and many. SOMANY is meant to symbolize the mutlifaceted members. The member are and can be "SOMANY" things, as explained by their website. Because of its meaning, the name represents self-confidence and self-expression.
The fandom name SOMUCH is a combination of the words so and much. It reflects the meaning of SOMANY, as the members have "SOMUCH" loves for their fans. The name was also chosen because it lets the members say "I love you SOMUCH" ("I love you so much").

Concept[]

SOMANY has a fun and quirky visual aesthetic. They are influenced by the Y2K trend of early 2020's K-pop visually, but aren't considered a Y2K aesthetic group. SOMANY's colour motifs are light and vibrant, mainly yellow, blue, and pink.

SIDES OF ME

SOMANY's debut, SIDES OF ME, is heavily inspired by 2000's teen magazines. The release's concept photos were styled after magazine covers. Included in the physical copies of the mini-album are magazine-like booklet with song lyrics and descriptions written like magazine articles.

Artistry[]

SOMANY, as a Connection Entertainment group, stand out for their dance skills and choreography. Although only Meiling, Shuchen, Quincy, and Koiha are the official dance line, all seven members are up to Connection Entertainment's high standard of dance. SOMANY's choreography matches their fun and upbeat concept. The group's choreography is influenced by commercial jazz, typical to most K-pop girl groups, but with a heavier influence from new style hip-hop to showcase the group's dance skills.
Musically, SOMANY's sound covers many genres. At their core, they are a pop group, but reach into several different areas of pop. SOMANY's debut title track, DallaDallaDalla, combines elements of four-on-the-floor club music with pop rap. in love is an acoustic pop ballad, while arcade is trap pop inspired by 8-bit music. SOMANY, wanting a youthful sound that appeals to teenagers, also dabbles in what the group considers to be "K-pop punk", which is pop punk within the K-pop sound. This is shown in songs such as group chat and get over.

In the first episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY are sent on a kitchen adventure. The members must work together through several food-related challenge that push them to the limit of their minimal culinary knowledge.
Highlight Moments Stephany saying "Gorden Ramsey kamsahamnida" in a very American accent to a cardboard cut-out of a random chef several times throughout the episode. Koiha cutting a carrot with a really large knife and panicking about it because she "doesn't want to take responsibility if she kills someone by accident by letting go of the knife", to which the other members tell her to stop talking. Shuchen and Quincy having a "roast battle" where they try to make insults with the phrase "pork roast" after a staff member mentions it as their favourite food. Meiling saying hello to the pasta every time she checks it when it's cooking in the water. Wonkyung trying to politely explain a challenge while the other members are fighting each other behind her.

In the second episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY must compete against each other in an idol sport's day. The members earn points based on how they rank in each event.
Highlight Moments Meiling yelling "Idol image is for losers!" during the soccer game to get the other members to play more aggressively. The members arguing on who gets Quincy on their team for the basketball challenge due to her tall height. Koiha performing DallaDallaDalla as a celebration dance after winning the 100m sprint challenge. All of the members laying down on the grass after all the challenges are done because they're so exhausted. Shuchen being forced to make a speech after being announced as the winner of the sport's day and refusing to thank the members because of it.
3	SOMANY Questions	02.16.2024
In the third episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY take on a series of questions to help fans know them better. Each question involves an activity to complete after answering.
Highlight Moments Stephany performing the chorus of SOLVIZ's Fingertip. Koiha performing all of the aegyo songs that she knows to prove that she is good at aegyo. All of the members fighting jokingly when asked who the visual member is before all dramatically posing as if they are in a magazine shoot which prompts the staff members to ask them if that was a bit they came up with. Meiling and Quincy doing the can-can together instead of dance battling like they were asked to do. Perlah being forced to answer questions by the other members so that she gets more screen time.
4	SOMANY Styles	02.23.2024
In the fourth episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY must compete in fashion-related activities. The members earn points from fashion judges that are just staff members.
Highlight Moments Stephany referring to her style as "California-core" and "Hannah Montana wannabe". Quincy and Shuchen getting into a voguing dance battle while on the runway. Meiling putting together the considerably worst outfit of the episode and acting like a salesperson in order to convince the judges that it's not that bad. Koiha trying to walk in super high heels and falling. Perlah winning the competition easily due to her background in fashion.

In the fifth episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY must learn several different style of dance. The members compete against each other with choreographies.
Highlight Moments All of the members joking with the staff about the challenge being too easy because "they are Connection Entertainment idols so of course they can perform any dance style". Wonkyung accidentally whacking Koiha in the face with her hand several times. Stephany's tap-dance choreography being essentially a musical theater number. Meiling performing a contemporary choreography and it genuinely being good. Quincy being forced to perform a second time after she wins the challenge.
6	SOMANY Paints	03.08.2024
In the sixth episode of SOMANY's Side Adventure, the members of SOMANY go to an art studio. The members must do several paint-related challenges.
Highlight Moments Shuchen being super serious about painting a portrait of Koiha only for the painting to be kind of terrifying. Meiling and Stephany sabotaging each other's paintings throughout the entire episode. Perlah painting an actually good painting of a flower and then purposely messing it up because nobody else made a good painting. The members chasing Wonkyung with their paintbrushes to try and get paint on her face. Quincy trying to explain all of her paintings as if she is a professional artist.
