"Snob!" is a collaborative hip-hop single by South Korean artists Lady Ruby, Takamura Sukima of BEAUDENT, and Shin Wooseong. It was released through 24D Arts on June 1, 2024.

"Snob!" won Best Urban/Hip-Hop Song at the year-end 2024 Shining Groove Awards, and was nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Recording at the 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards.

BACKGROUND[]

Interpolation[]

"SNOB!" samples the chorus hook of "Hit That Snob", a single released by then-active South Korean rock band Unappetize through Libertas Entertainment on February 1, 1999. The Korean hard rock song was written and produced by solo artist Cho Heon-cheol and band members Park Eun-byul and Byun Hong-sil, as a follow up to their hit song "Crazy Love, Crazy Die". The song turned out to be a minimal success, receiving negative reviews from music critics for being inferior to their debut output and struggling to find a middle ground between their "rockstar rage" energy and radio-pandering generic song structure, which publications such as MBS Music attribute to them hastily signing to a mainstream record label. Plans for a music video for the song were scrapped as the band scrambled to release another single in the wake of its poor performance.

Nonetheless, despite the song being quickly forgotten in South Korea, a translated version of the song by Filipino band The Filmography was quite popular among local radio stations in Davao, Philippines; the frontwoman had discovered the song after shopping for vinyls during a vacation in Seoul, and successfully secured permission to remake it with the help of a friend. Jasper Williams, a former member of Berlin-based indie band BITTERBOY, released a solo cover of the song in April 2015, while project duo SWSW performed it for a cover in variety show Sisters Class.

MUSIC VIDEO[]

The music video for "SNOB!" was directed by Ahn Sang-won and was filmed in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, a suburb of Seoul. The music video begins with Lady Ruby putting a disc labelled after the song in a CD player, followed by the beginning of the song. Ruby and Sukima are inside a small grunge-themed room that contrasts with their colorful Y2K-inspired outfits, fiercely mouthing their verses while holding sparkling microphones. In a separate set, Wooseong is seen across an empty office, gliding across the room with an office chair, walking across desks while carelessly browsing his phone, and defacing a photo of a corporation's CEO. The three artists are seen together in two different scenes: in an abandoned diner building with a luxury convertible having crashed through the wall from outside, and a choreography sequence with multiple backup dancers in a dimly lit parking lot, the latter of which is a direct reference to early 2000s hip hop trio BDNTZ and their music video for their 2002 hit single "Intentional Crime".
