Ryu Duck-Gyu (류덕규), known professionally as DUCK (덕) or formerly TITAN (타이탄) is a Korean singer-songwriter and composer under Olympic Records. He is the former maknae of the boy group B.O.S.S under the stage name TITAN. He made his solo debut in 2008 under the stage name DUCK.
Early Life[]
Ryu Duck-Gyu was born on May 26, 1990 in Gangnam-Gu, Seoul, South Korea. He, like his older siblings before him, was born and lived in his affluent paternal grandparents' large home. A culinary devotee forced into an administration profession, Ryu's father was said to be unhappy with the way his life was being lived. Ryu's mother, a college professor, contributed in saving up money to allow his father to pursue opening a Korean fast-food restaurant overseas. In 1995, he and his family moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he went under the English name 'Duckie Ryu.'
It was in America that he began to take to singing and was entered in various local competitions, often placing on the podium. He later expressed that singing was how he was able to learn the English language so quick. His father's business proved to be a success; that, paired with his mother obtaining a similarly paid job at Harvard, the Ryu family were able to experience financial independence.
In 2003, he was scouted by a Mountain Peak Plaza representative at the mall. Apprehensive at first, it was only when he 'realised that the company was the same as B.O.S.S' and Snowfall's' did he take it seriously. His mother accompanied him to Seoul for an audition. Upon passing, he moved back to Seoul with his paternal grandparents being listed as his custodians. He formally became a trainee a few months shy of his thirteenth birthday.
Trainee period[]
As soon as he began his training, Duckgyu was being prepared to debut in 'Project O;' a boy group intended to change the vision of Mountain Peak Plaza. In later interviews, he would confirm that Project O was the internal name used for HERCULES.
Frequently as a trainee he appeared in Snowfall's music videos, most often playing the role of a younger brother or friend. As a result of his frequency and consistency in the roles, he was given the nickname 'Snowflake Boy' by K-pop fans.
A few months into his trainee period, it became increasingly clear that the leader of B.O.S.S intended to leave the group, causing the company to seek a replacement. Duckgyu was among the five selected (later bandmate Kwon Chan-Wook was included in this line-up) as prospective replacement members. Aiming to capitalise on his growing popularity, the company chose him to be the replacement member and assume the role of maknae within the group.
Career[]
2004: Debut in B.O.S.S[]
In January 2004, Duckgyu was announced as the newest member of B.O.S.S, using the moniker Titan. Though announced in January and him partaking in some daytime weekend performances, he officially joined the line-up in June after his fourteenth birthday and the release of their latest comeback. Younger than the other members by six-years, he received the nickname 'The Baby Boss.'
2008-2010: Enlistment and solo debut[]
Following the disbandment of B.O.S.S, Duckgyu resigned with Olympic Records and promoted primarily as a variety show entertainer before enlisting in the South Korean military to complete his mandatory service. He enlisted alongside his older brother who had chosen then to do so, citing that he needed to support his younger brother during a difficult time.
He was discharged in early 2010 and began preparations to debut as a soloist. According to later comments made on V-Live, the company offered him his once intended place in HERCULES to which he declined. He debuted in the summer of 2010 with his single "Sunrays."
