History[]
2012 - 2019: Predebut, Formation[]
Jo Bisung first decided to debut a new boy group, following the success of Bee Entertainment’s main boy group Bright Lights and continued mainstream rising of Hyolin and Snowflake, in 2018. Although rm8z as an idea is credited with starting then, the group had been forming since 2012.
Kim Doyoung joined Bee Entertainment as a part of the SUPER BEES in 2012, at age 11. He was the youngest trainee in the company until Son Minseo joined in 2013, with the two of them being the youngest trainees until 2016 with the addition of Jaide Anabelle Sangco Santillan. In 2013 and 2014, Doyoung was part of the test group lineup for Bright Lights. He did not debut with the group due to his young age. After Snowflake’s debut in 2017, Doyoung was named the leader of the Bees. He had been there longer than any of the other trainees at the time, and although he was not suited to be a leader, he was certainly one of the most skilled trainees.
In 2014, Kim Yeonsung joined Bee Entertainment in the SPRING BEES. A strong and skilled dancer, Yeonsung was a natural leader when it came to dance lessons.
In 2014, Jo Eunhyun was scouted and joined Bee Entertainment. Eunhyun’s eye-catching visuals and gentle voice made him rise in popularity among those who were interested in the Bees. In 2016, Eunhyun was considered as a candidate to become the company’s next soloist along Im Hyorin, who was the successful candidate.
In 2015, Choi Soonhyeon and Kwon Chaemin joined Bee Entertainment with the SUMMER BEES. The two best friends came as a lyricist-producer duo. Soonhyeon was a skilled lyricist while Chaemin was a strong musician with a strong interest in composing and arranging.
In 2017, Yoon Jinwon and Lee Jaeseok joined Bee Entertainment as a part of the STAR BEES. Jinwon gained attention with his cute and shy voice that was hiding his true skill as a rapper. Jaeseok’s high performance skills at his young age caused Bee Entertainment fans to constantly ask for him to debut.
In October 2018, Bisung chose the seven trainees to become the next test group. He wanted to create a group that would be able to give exceptional performances. Bee Entertainment’s artists had been gaining attention for their charisma and general skills, but Bisung felt that their live vocals were underrated and overlooked. Snowflake had shown that they were already strong vocalists in the industry, so Bisung continued with training the test group with a focus in live vocals. The test group, along with their vocals, showed a high amount of stamina that rivaled the other Bee Entertainment artists. Bisung changed their focus away from becoming a top 4th generation vocal group to being powerhouse performers, which the trainees suited a lot more.
In early 2019, while sorting out the details of the test group’s concept, Bisung realized that four of the members could participate in the production of their songs. Chaemin and Jaeseok were both growing their composition and arrangement skills and worked well together. Soonhyeon and Jinwon were two of the best lyric writers out of the trainees. Bisung decided that the test group’s concept would be that they were self-produced, and asked the four trainees to start focusing a bit more on their production training.
In May 2019, the test group was confirmed as the next Bee Entertainment group. The trainees were told this along with their debut date in August of that year. Bisung let the group decide their own roles within the group as he wanted to give them as much freedom as he could. Yeonsung was chosen as the leader and Doyoung was chosen as the center. Around three weeks later, after long discussions with the members, the group’s name was decided as rm8z.
On July 5th, 2019, rm8z was announced to the public. A picture of the group’s logo was posted to Bee Entertainment’s social media accounts. Fans were initially confused at how to pronounce the name, but it was explained at a press conference held the next day. At that press conference, rm8z was officially announced as a boy group. Fans began to speculate about which trainees would be debuting.
Starting on July 7th, one member was revealed per day. Yeon Su (Yeonsung), Sun (Soonhyeon), Eunhyun, Chae (Chaemin), Do Young (Doyoung), JWon (Jinwon), and Jaeseok were each introduced with their profiles. These included unique member colours, similar to Bright Lights and Snowflake. Almost as soon as the members were revealed, Bee Entertainment began marketing their concept of being self-produced. In their member positions, the producer and lyricist members had those roles explicitly stated. With the rise of self-produced groups such as SEVENTEEN and Stray Kids, people took notice of this. Although rm8z were far from the only self-producing group, Bee Entertainment’s reputation for being a company where producers and lyricists can thrive made the prospect of a self-produced group from them exciting.
2019: Debut, RM8Z[]
On July 17th, 2019, rm8z’s debut mini-album RM8Z was announced through social media. rm8z made their debut with the mini-album on August 17th and the pop rock title track “별자리 (Constellation)”. They held their debut showcase at Blue Square Mastercard Hall in Seoul on the same day. RM8Z had an overall pop rock sound and an upbeat and youthful concept. On its first day, RM8Z sold 24k copies, which rose to 74k by the end of the first week, breaking the record for first week sales for a debut release by a Bee Entertainment artist. RM8Z placed within the monthly top ten of the Gaon Album Chart and “별자리 (Constellation)” peaked at #95 on the weekly Gaon Digital Chart. During promotions, rm8z were noted by industry critics for their strong performance skills as a rookie group.
After their promotions, rm8z announced their fandom name as gr8z. The name was a pun on the word “greats”, matching the formatting of rm8z’s name.
Awards season for rm8z started at the Shining Groove Awards on December 14th where they won the Rookie of the Year award. This was followed by the Seoul Music Performance Awards on December 28th where they picked up Best Male Group Vocal Performance for 별자리 (Constellation). Chae noted that the vocal performance award was very special for them to achieve, since it meant that ditching the original vocal-based concept for the group didn’t affect the quality of their vocal performance overall.
2020: C4CT, 2NSPR, COSMOTIC[]
On January 3rd, 2020, rm8z began airing the first season of their variety show rm8z Your Side.
rm8z released their first EP C4CT, with the title track “되감기 (Connection)”, on January 12th. C4CT contrasted heavily from the bright concept of RM8Z with a darker, more emotional rock sound. International K-pop magazine THE K-POP GENERATION wrote, “C4CT displays the development and improvement of rm8z's music and sound in an extraordinary sense by taking a risk and diverting away from their brighter debut concept to show the group’s skills in performing with different concepts”. C4CT sold 34k copies on its first day, which rose to 102k in the first week. rm8z managed to receive their first win with “되감기 (Connection)” on Hallyumak. This was followed by a win on KTB Music Show and two wins on The Core Music Show. “되감기 (Connection)” stayed on The Core Music Show’s chart for seven weeks.
In April, rm8z began teasing their next comeback. rm8z’s social media accounts switched their layouts from the red and black of C4CT to a pastel-coloured theme. On May 24th, rm8z released their second mini-album 2NSPR and the title track “결정화 (Crystallization)”. Similar to the drastic aesthetic shift between RM8Z and C4CT, there was a complete change in aesthetic from C4CT to 2NSPR. 2NSPR took on a cuter, softer sound, with “결정화 (Crystallization)” incorporating elements of bubblegum pop in its production. The sales for 2NSPR rose from 54k on its first day to 163k for the first week. rm8z picked up six wins for “결정화 (Crystallization)” during promotions. Four of the wins were from The Core Music Show, with the other two being from Music Rank.
On July 12th, rm8z performed on the rookie stage at SGA Summer Blast Festival 2020. They performed a selection of songs from their previous releases. The reception to rm8z’s performance was very positive, with many casual fans who watched the SGA Summer Blast Festival 2020 livestream discussing rm8z’s performance.
On rm8z’s first debut anniversary, which was on August 17th, their first online concert was held. Titled rm8z Online Concert 2020 WE R rm8z, it was held through an online service. The concert was recorded in Olympic Hall and broadcasted to about 40,000 fans via livestream. At the concert, a song that was not released on their previous releases was performed named “UFO”.
On September 19th, the second season of rm8z Your Side began airing. The first season had drawn in fans due to the members and their chaotic interactions.
On September 20th, rm8z’s first studio album was announced. The group’s social media accounts switched to layouts themed around a space concept. On October 19th, rm8z released their first studio album COSMOTIC with the title track “Star Rider”. The album capitalized on the rise of the synthpop trend within K-pop while blending it with rm8z’s pop rock sound. Music critic LILIANNE MAY wrote, “‘Star Rider’ takes a genre that is due to become oversaturated and gives it flavour and shine, while the rest of COSMOTIC takes a chance to explore the concept further through various genres and sounds”. COSMOTIC sold 80k copies on its first day and 240k copies for the first week. “Star Rider” received a win on TOP ICON and was nominated on several other music shows.
Award season started again at the Shining Groove Awards with rm8z winning Best Group, Best Dance Performance Male Group for Star Rider, and SGA Album of the Year for COSMOTIC. The Seoul Music Performance Awards saw rm8z winning Hottest Trend.
2021: EVERGREEN, Headlight, SIGNAL[]
Bringing in 2021, rm8z released their third mini-album EVERGREEN on January 3rd. EVERGREEN explored a gentle, sophisticated concept based around a nature motif. The title track of the same name was ballad-adjacent, which fans considered to be a big step away from the sound they wanted from the group for their title tracks. Although EVERGREEN as a mini-album was well-received for its strong b-side tracks, “EVERGREEN” did not connect with rm8z’s audience and was overlooked by the general public. Despite the neutrality towards “EVERGREEN”, EVERGREEN sold 170k copies on its first day and 508k copies in its first week. “EVERGREEN” did not receive any music show wins.
From March to June, rm8z took part in Battle of Stardom. In the introduction performances, rm8z performed Star Rider with an intergalactic warrior concept. In the group votes and the fan votes, they placed 2nd. This placed them second overall for the performances. For the Song Switch round, rm8z switched songs with TROX and performed Watching You. They used a concept of stargazing and transformed the song into a pop rock sound. rm8z placed 3rd in the group votes and 7th in the fan votes. This led them to placing 3rd in the round overall.
In the Different Concept round, rm8z showed off their darker side. They performed DDU-DU DDU-DU by BLACKPINK with an edgy concept. rm8z ranked 2nd in the group votes and 3rd in the fan votes. They placed 3rd in the round overall. For the Talent round, rm8z sent three members. For the vocal performances, Chae performed Moscow Moscow by ONF in a ballad-style arrangement. For dance, Yeon Su performed Tempo by EXO with hip-hop choreography. For rap, JWon performed a self-written rap. For the rankings, Chae placed 1st in vocal, Yeon Su placed 7th in dance, and JWon placed 6th in rap. rm8z placed 3rd in the round overall. In the Collaboration round, rm8z collaborated with SPAXIAL and performed Monster by EXO with elemental powers being the concept. The collaboration ranked 5th for the round overall. In the Inspiration round, rm8z performed DALLA DALLA by ITZY. The performance was themed around getting prepared for a performance. They ranked 2nd in the group votes and 2nd in the fan votes, ranking them 2nd overall for the round. In the New Song round, rm8z performed their original song Teenage Lovesick, an upbeat, rock-based track. Their performance had a youthful, rebellious tone. rm8z received 1st for the streaming votes, with their song rising on the charts during the streaming period before the episode. In the fan votes, rm8z placed 5th. rm8z placed 2nd overall for the round. With all of their points combined, rm8z placed 1st and became a winner of Battle of Stardom.
During Battle of Stardom, rm8z released a comeback. rm8z released their first single album Headlight on May 26th. The title track of the same name was based around the calmer concept that rm8z had wanted for EVERGREEN while improving on the aspects that the fans had criticized. “Headlight” was gentle and soft, yet fun and happy. Both fans and the general public received “Headlight” very well. Headlight sold 106k copies on its first day, due to EVERGREEN dissipating some of rm8z’s growing hype within the industry, and rose to 311k copies for the first week. “Headlight” performed very well on the digital charts for a 4th generation boy group song, reaching the top of both the Bugs chart and the Genie chart. rm8z also saw new career record peaks on the MelOn and Flo charts, although not breaking into the top 15. Several music critics praised “Headlight”, and a couple who were notorious for being judgemental of rm8z’s self-produced concept admitted that they were too harsh on rm8z. “Headlight” earned four music show wins.
On July 13th and 14th, rm8z performed at SGA Summer Blast Festival 2021. They performed a collection of their newer songs with an emphasis on songs that their fans like. On August 24th, rm8z performed at the International Convention of K-Music Festival in Chiba, Japan.
rm8z won a few awards at the early award shows of the year. At the K-Vibe Awards on September 17th, rm8z won the Main Prize, Artist Award, and Next Artist Award. At the AGN Awards on September 20th, rm8z won the Popularity Award.
rm8z released their second EP SIGNAL on November 30th. The title track “ENTER” stood out for its electronica and rock production. Fans noted that “ENTER” was somewhat reminiscent of NCT’s sound, but more friendly to the general public. rm8z held their comeback show rm8z Comeback Show SIGNAL on the same day at Gocheok Sky Dome, which was broadcasted on the December 3rd episode of TOP ICON. Canadian gr8z expressed mixed sentiments about the group choosing to perform in Calgary over a bigger city like Toronto, to which Do Young responded that K-pop groups always perform in Ontario and that it annoyed him. The comment was made in a joking matter, but it started a big discussion among gr8z that spread to fans of other groups about how so many artists only perform in Ontario when they go to Canada.
