Rising Star V (Korean: 라이징 스타 V; RR: Laijing Seuta V) is fifth season of Rising Star, South Korean reality competition show created in collaboration with Mnet and MB Entertainment. The fifth season aired weekly on Mnet from September 19, 2015, to December 12, 2015. The show follows aspiring K-pop idols as they compete to secure a spot in a new idol group produced by MB Entertainment.

Out of thousand of applications from across the world, 99 contestants among Korean, Japanese, and Chinese ethnicities were selected for the show. The contestants were split evenly into 3 groups: K-group, J-group, and C-group.

In the finale on December 12, 2015, contestants Yu Chunhua, Sun Jinghua, Seong Soojin, Masaki Asami, Yao Jingfei, Tashiro Mayuko, Mino Michiko, Kang Sora, Umeji Kinuye, and Wan Meilin were officially announced as the final 10 members who would debut as VEGA.

Concept and format[]

Rising Star V deviates from traditional singing competition shows by incorporating a unique voting system where viewers at home play a crucial role in determining the contestants' fate. This season's format was designed to keep the competition dynamic and engaging.

Judges and Experts[]

While the viewers at home were considered the "judges," a panel of celebrity experts also influenced the vote.

The panel for Rising Star V included:

  • Bae Suzy: Member of Miss A, soloist, and actress.
  • Sunmi: A renowned solo artist and former member of Wonder Girls.
  • Taemin: A member of SHINee and successful solo artist.
  • Taecyeon: A member of 2PM and actor.

During the first six shows, a "yes" vote from one of the judges added 7% to the performer's total score, contributing up to 28% of the total score.

Competition Rounds[]

Demo Stage[]

The first round, known as the demo stage, involved 10,000 contestants individually performing to receive a "blue yes" vote from the judges to move on to the next round. Additionally, contestants could receive a "purple yes" vote, which provided a publicity advantage via social media, making them eligible to become the first Rising Star top 9 of the series. The final 99 contestants for Rising Star were selected in this stage.

Public Evaluation[]

In the second round, the 99 contestants faced public evaluation, where both judges and live audience voting played a role. Contestants needed to achieve a threshold of 80% to progress to the next round. There was no restriction on the number of contestants from each group that could move on. Contestants who did not reach the 80% threshold but had the highest percentage among those who failed were eligible for a wildcard round. The highest percentage among these eligible contestants advanced as a wildcard contestant.

Planet Duels[]

The third round, known as the Planet Duels, required contestants to beat their opponents to progress to the next round, the K/C/J Duels. The top 9 contestants from each group, or those who won their duels, advanced. Contestants placing 10th to 13th in each group competed for two spots in the next round. In the wildcard round, contestants who lost their duels were ranked by their percentages. The contestants placing 8th to 11th in their respective groups participated in this round to secure their spot in the next round.

Playoffs 1: Final 33[]

In the fourth round, known as the Final 33, contestants aimed to place as high as possible to avoid being in the bottom 10, who were eliminated. Contestants placing 20th to 23rd competed in a wildcard round for the twentieth spot.

Playoffs 2: Final 20[]

In the fifth round, the Final 20, contestants again aimed to place as high as possible to avoid being in the bottom 5, who were eliminated. Contestants needed to be in the PLANET TOP 9 to guarantee a spot in the Final 10.

Lineup Finale[]

In the sixth round, the Final 15, serves as the final round to determine to the debut group. Contestants need to be in the RISING STAR TOP 9 to guarantee a spot to debut in VEGA. Contestants placing 10th to 13th competed in a wildcard round for the final debut spot.

Grand Finale[]

In the seventh and final round, the VEGA debut members must compete against each other to determine the placement of debut group, all aiming to place 1st, to become the center of the new debut group.
