Park Eunwoo was born as Matty Park on October 2, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to a couple whose names are undisclosed. He is the youngest child and only son with three older sisters, (Park ‘Kerri’ Hana born in 1987, Park ‘Stacy’ Bora born in 1989, and Park ‘Ashley’ Chaewon born in 1990). His mother is a professional jeweler while his father worked as a teacher at a private school.

Both his mother, father and his three sisters immigrated from Jungnang-gu, Seoul, South Korea in 1994 due to his father being offered residency to become a teacher at the school he is teaching at, and from there his family moved to Canada 3 years prior to him being born.

At first his parents were content with only having three daughters, so when it was discovered that his mother was pregnant with him, it came as a surprise to everyone, due to them stating that they only wanted girls and were blessed with three girls. When his mother was 5 months pregnant with him, they were informed that he was going to be a girl, to which they named him Park Yoohyun, with his English name was going to be Michelle. So it came as a surprise when he was born and he was not a girl but in fact a boy. His sisters stated that for the first 6 months of his infancy, all he wore was pink, causing many people to mistake him as a girl when he was first born.

Growing up, due to his sisters all taking dance class, his parents eventually enrolled him into their dance academy along with them seeing it was easier to know where all four of them were at all times. As a child, he quickly excelled in dance, with him being offered a spot in his dance academies competition team, he remained on the competition team from 2004 to 2010, where he won several titles such as “Little Mister Dance” in 2006, and “Best Dancer Juniors” in 2008.

Eunwoo was scouted by Blair Entertainment’s CEO Bae Jungyeol in the winter of 2010, when he was in Korea with his family, visiting for Christmas break. Bae Jungyeol spotted him leaving the mall with his family in Seoul, and stopped the family of 6, asking for Eunwoo to audition for his company, stating that he had the looks and the potential to become one of Korea’s biggest stars.

At first, his parents were opposed to letting Eunwoo audition, stating that Eunwoo’s lack of knowledge and skill in speaking in Korean would hinder him and that since he was only 13, he should focus on his school and education first. His sisters were the ones that managed to persuade their parents, saying that it’s not every day when the CEO of a company personally scouts a trainee and that it is a good thing. Eunwoo with his parents permission auditioned for Blair Entertainment and was accepted as the companies second ever trainee that same day.

Training Period[]

Eunwoo joined the then unrevealed Blair Boys training program on December 27, 2010, at 13 years old.

Due to Eunwoo being an international trainee, for all of 2011, he only showed up to Korea during summer break for practice. Despite this, Eunwoo was a confirmed member for the companies first boy group, with Bae Jungyeol stating “the group now has their center member, we just need to gather others that can keep up”.

At the recommendation of Bae Jungyeol and the head trainers in Blair, Eunwoo moved to Korea in January of 2012 to begin full training. It was here where he fully began proper training. Unfortunately, due to the sudden change in Countries in such short notice, his school credits that he had gotten from his High School at the time, were lost in international transit, causing him to temporarily not be in school for several years.

During Eunwoo’s full fledged time as a trainee from 2012, Eunwoo began training in earnest with the other trainees, working with them to ensure their debut, due to him being the only confirmed member for debut, his position was never in danger of being removed. Despite this, Eunwoo stated that he felt even more pressure to perform well in each evaluation, and that several of the older trainees were all frustrated with him due to him being a foreigner but also their center due to his broken Korean and how much younger he was compared to the other trainees despite him being the companies second ever trainee. This was a point of contention for Eunwoo, who stated that due to him being the only member with a confirmed debut spot, he got a lot of anxiety due to fearing if he messed up, their debut would be canceled.

Eunwoo revealed that he considered running away at one point in 2014 due to the pressures of being the groups center, but fellow trainees Joo Yubin and Lee Hongseok who he was living with at the time chased after him in the dead of night when he ran off, with both of them reassuring him that he was doing a good job as a trainee and he was meant to be the groups center. With their words of encouragement, Eunwoo returned to the dorms with them and stated that both of them saved him from one of the biggest mistakes he could have made.

During one of their training practices, they did acting, and it was here where the head trainers realized that Eunwoo could act, and it was here where, Eunwoo who was originally training to learn how to rap, was swapped with further intensive acting classes and advanced Korean language classes to prepare him for his debut as a child actor.

Career[]

2012-2024: Debut as an Actor, Acting in “Playback” and “Azure Sky”[]

On September 12, 2012, Eunwoo was formally revealed to the public for the first time as an up-and-coming child actor for upcoming Korean Drama “Playback” where he was casted as “Kim Hyungmin” the youngest brother of the main family. He was mostly seen in the background, with his character “Hyungmin” being seen as a sickly child with distorted speech that was helpful due to Eunwoo’s still none-fluent Korean at the time.

The drama was seen with relative success, with critics stating that Eunwoo’s acting in the drama was well done, even saying that his Korean, while still not good at the time, was perfect for the character he was portraying.

On April 3, 2014, Eunwoo once again appeared on Korean television, this time in “Azure Sky” as the character “Kwon Jaekyun”.

His character, Jaekyun was another minor character, close to the main character in the show “Kim Boshin”, with the drama being a coming-of-age series, which develops from adolescence into adulthood. His acting was well received once more, gaining more attention to him, with him being able to capture the right emotions of a teenage boy going through puberty, as well as being praised by Koreans alike for his expert use of Busan Satoori that the character was known to use often.

Eunwoo himself stated that he learnt how to speak in Busan Satoori easily because several of the trainees he was living with were all from Busan, so they often spoke in the dialect often, with him being able to pick up the dialects' quirks easily over time. This dedication of teaching himself a dialect gave him positive responses from fans of the drama, stating that this level of dedication will take him far saying they see why he was picked to be a trainee at such a young age.

2015-2016: Debut in EMERGE, rise in popularity[]

On January 2, 2015, it was announced by Blair Entertainment that they would be debuting their first boy group in the summer of this year.

Upon the announcement of the boy group, fans of “Playback” and “Azure Sky” were excited to see Eunwoo again, but this time not as an actor, but as an idol due to Eunwoo himself having gone radio silent after “Azure Sky” had wrapped up filming with fans assuming that he was in another film or if he was preparing his his idol debut.

As the weeks went by and no word on whether Eunwoo was going to be debuting with the new group continued, fans began voicing their concern stating that Eunwoo was deserving of a debut due to how known he was due to his acting.

Fans' worries were put to rest on June 22, 2015, when Eunwoo under the name Helio was revealed as the eighth member of EMERGE.

He debuted with the rest of EMERGE on July 14, 2015, with their mini album Act I: Garnet. Fans reception of the album was mixed, due to the groups hip-hop sound, fans were unsure if this group would succeed but were more so concerned with Eunwoo stating that the concept that he was debuting in was completely different from the images of the character he portrayed who were both soft spoken boys who were always happy.

Due to Eunwoo’s past experiences in the industry, he was able to appear on several real time shows, promoting the group and the company, quickly earning him favor due to his quick witted personality, and sharp answers, gaining him and the group more fans each time. He quickly earned his nickname “Sharp as the Sun” , a moniker of his stage name, due to how fast he is with his Korean on these shows.

Despite his debut as a singer, his fans from his acting days have all lamented that while they are happy for his debut due to him having trained for four years, they also wish to see him return as an actor as well. Eunwoo replied to these stating that he understood and that sooner rather than later he’d be coming back, but as Park Eunwoo of EMERGE but Park Eunwoo the actor.

During the course of 2015 to 2016, Eunwoo was appearing in multiple shows, being a host MC for Music Bank, and appearing as a radio DJ at one point as well. From this alone, Eunwoo was able to carve out a name for himself as a talent and not just an idol.

Everything came to a head, in the May of 2016, where the company announced his complete halt of activities due to injuring himself during filming for the groups album Act III: Pearl. As such, not only would he be absent from all of the group's promotions that period, but he was out of the public eye from May to August of 2016.

2017-2019: Breakout in Popularity, Acting in “Scarlet Night”, “Rainbow Noona”, and “Afterschool Adventure”, Rookie Actor Awards[]

On February 7, 2017, it was announced that Eunwoo would be making his comeback as an actor after almost three years. His last time acting was back in 2014 with “Azure Sky”. This time, not only will he be returning to the screen, but this will also be his debut as a leading actor.

He will be portraying “Jung Hyukjae” one of the main characters in the drama “Scarlet Night”. His character, Hyukjae, is known as the delinquent exchange student that joins the main cast's friend group as the last member while they try to escape a forest with unknown killers trying to kill him.

Critiques had praised Eunwoo for his portrayal of “Jung Hyukjae” stating that at first they were unsure of Eunwoo acting like such a bad guy, but his use of Busan Satoori that he had learnt from his prior acting experiences quickly silenced their concerns stating that once again, Eunwoo was able to understand quickly the use of the dialect and was able to use it at smart times to capture the desperate feelings in the drama.

The drama was a big success in Korea, with it achieving skyrocketing reviews and viewership during the drama’s run. The drama ended up being nominated for several awards, winning most of them. It was here where Eunwoo won his very first awards as an actor, with him earning the coveted ‘Best Rookie Actor of 2017’ that year.

Eunwoo, along with fellow EMERGE members Eunjin and Skylar released an OST that was featured in the drama titled “Into The Blood Moon”.

Along with not only Eunwoo achieving success after several years, so too did EMERGE, with 2017 also being the first year where they got their first ever music show win.

During the remaining course of 2017, Eunwoo was everywhere in Korea, with him being chosen as the commercial boy for several famous makeup brands, quickly earning him the nickname as “Rising 3rd Gen It Boy” due to his surge in popularity.

On August 4, 2018, Blair Entertainment announced that he was casted for the upcoming winter drama “Winter Noona” this time as “Kim Soohyun”, a side character that is part of the main characters group of friends.

Upon the news of him being casted into a supporting role, fans were upset stating that his acting in Scarlet Night had proven that he can be a main character material and are wondering as to why he was not given that type of role again this time.

Eunwoo took to social media to calm his fans, stating that he had originally been casted for Rainbow Noona before Scarlet Night had even finished casting, and that understood where his fans were coming from, but asked them to refrain from being upset. Eunwoo also stated that he went in knowing he was auditioning for a small role and that he wanted to play Soohyun instead of anyone else and that he is certain that he can play the character well.

On May 14, 2019, it was announced that Eunwoo was casted in yet another drama, “Afterschool Adventure”, this time as one of the leading actors, playing “Park Jaehyun”. A character who is a nerdy shy boy that is afraid of everything, that becomes more adventurous through his friends after school activities that he joins in on.

To coincide with the release of the drama, Eunwoo, along with Skylar and Eden sang a song for the drama as an OST, the song being titled “Detention”.

2020-2022: Continued acting, “Wow Simply”, “End of Love”, and “Playback the Reunion”[]

Upon the group's explosion into the mainstream, it was here where Eunwoo got more and more increasingly popular and in-demand for acting roles due to his positive reviews on his characters in the other dramas he acted in.

On January 16, 2020, it was announced that Eunwoo was casted as a leading actor in a new drama “Wow Simply” as “Chae Hyunsik”. A character who is monotone about life, viewing the world as black and white, before falling in love with a girl who brightens up his world.

To coincide with the drama as well, he released his first solo OST “Such Simple Love”. The song being his first foray into solo singing outside of group albums. The song was received well, with it charting for several weeks after its release, rising anticipation from his fans of his eventual solo release if he were to debut as a soloist.

After the release of “Wow Simply”, Eunwoo took a step back from acting for the rest of 2020 and early 2021. Eunwoo himself stating that he loves acting, but wants to focus not just on it, but EMERGE, as he has slowly been pulled too tight by both at the same time for several years, so he wishes to focus on EMERGE for longer before he goes back to splitting his time between both acting and being a singer.

Eunwoo returned to acting in 2022, alongside his busy schedules and touring with EMERGE, he acted in two dramas that year.

On February 5, 2022, it was announced that he would be the main character “Lee Jungmin” in the upcoming romance drama “End of Love”. This drama was a change of pace for Eunwoo, who was normally seen as a teen actor that played soft spoken boys or delinquents, with this drama featuring his first even mature adult scene.

Fans at first were worried for this performance of Eunwoo, but Eunwoo took to a live, explaining that he knew what the scenes he would be doing wanted, and that he studied and practiced really hard for these scenes to come out right, and for fans and watchers alike to see that he isn’t just taking acting as a hobby, but intensely pursuing it as an actual career.

When “End of Love” began airing, he released a solo OST titled “Love Knock” to go with the drama. The song trended relatively well, with its highest charting being #20 on MelON.

On August 26, 2022, it was announced that Eunwoo would be reprising his role as “Kim Hyungmin” for the 10 year reunion of “Playback” under the name “Playback the Reunion”. His character, who was once a sickly boy, is now a young man who is studying in university and planning a trip abroad. As such his character was not seen as much like his original character, due to Eunwoo’s group obligations in which he was touring with them at the end of 2022.

Eunwoo released an OST for the drama titled “Playback the 10 Years”. The song once more did well on the charts, with its highest charting being #13 on Flo.
