Yang Soomi (양수미), professionally known as PENNY (페니), is a South Korean singer-songwriter and composer under All In Entertainment. She made her solo debut on December 23, 2024 with her first EP, A Letter.[2]
She is best known for being a contestant on the survival show Unite Girls in 2022.
Career[]
PENNY joined IMMERSE sometime in 2022 and participated on the survival show Unite Girls alongside her sister Stella Yang. She placed tenth and was unable to join the seven-member line-up. Through this, PENNY gained a large fanbase, both internationally and in South Korea. It was later alleged that the final was rigged, and as a result PENNY would've made the final line-up, which was later investigated.[3] It was also said that PENNY had experienced severe mistreatment off-camera.[4]
She contributed in writing for LIGHTERS' debut EP, specifically the fifth track "Sour Grapes". She has featured in the credits for several other songs in their discography. PENNY was also the main producer for the track "Burn That Thread" by girl group Nabi, released in April 2024.[5]
On December 7, 2024, it was reported that PENNY had signed an exclusive contract with All In Entertainment and would be making her solo debut later that month.[6] Her first EP, A Letter, was released on December 23.[2]
During her debut showcase for A Letter, PENNY revealed her official fandom name as "CHANGELING" (체인지링). The meaning behind the name symbolizes change (currency), also referencing a penny, as "CHANGELING are the coin of PENNY's support." It also references changeling, a creature from European folklore, with the meaning that "CHANGELING and PENNY are forever young together".[1]
Personal life[]
Yang Soomi was born in Suwon, South Korea. Her family consists of herself, her parents, an older sister (Stella of MOXXI) and a younger brother. She has enjoyed writing and composing songs from a young age. Aside from that, she is vocally trained with a distinctive mezzo-soprano range.
