Magic Entertainment was founded in 1996 by record producer and former singer Kim Seok-ok as Hangyu Records, home to girl group Beeverse and solo singer Kim Daewang. Hangyu Records filed for bankruptcy in January 2001 and restructured in early 2002, rebranding as Magic Entertainment with new artists such as WARRIOR and Bee-Gals.
In 2002, Magic Entertainment debuted boy group M.O.A after holding an audition in partnership with Mnet Music. It consisted of six members: Penny Wang, Kim Yunmin, Jeong Seowon, Kim Hyunsung, Nam Jungseong, and Lim Sangwon, all six of which ranged from ages 12 to 17; this severely attracted controversy and concern from the press. Sometime during the span of M.O.A, Kim Daewang left the company.
In 2005, Magic Entertainment launched a Japanese branch called Magic Entertainment Japan. As partnership with alternative record label, they launched idol girl group INSANICOUS ✩, consisting of seven members that were accepted through the auditions. They debuted in November 12, 2006 with the song "Can of Horrors", and received attention for their "hyper-color" and weird themes which were accompanied by dark and unorthodox lyricism, which the group coined as their original style called "bubblegum splatter". The group would ultimately disband in 2010 after a scandal involving the death of a former member had turned their image for the worse.
In 2005, former M.O.A member and soloist Lim Sang-won was revealed to have been kicked from the company, citing that Lim revealed of the company's poor treatment, while Magic Entertainment claimed there was no poor treatment, and then kicked him out.
In 2008, Magic Entertainment debuted their second boy band named HIGHPUNK. Beeverse announced in 2008 that it will debut a trot-pop girl group, it was done in January 2009 with the name of Z.Glam, with Beeverse members that are involved in the trot industry.
