MIIX is the Featured Idol of September 2024
|
Cho Mingyu (Hangul: 조민규) under stage name MIIX, is a South Korean soloist under Touch Entertainment . MIIX debuted on the 23rd of February 2022 with the single album WAITING.
History[]
Life[]
Mingyu grew up in Melbourne, Australia, in a loving and stable home with his adoptive dad and older brother. His mother passed away from cancer before he was born, and his biological father wasn’t able to take care of him due to mental and financial struggles. Despite that, Mingyu had a happy and ordinary childhood. He made a lot of friends at school and enjoyed hobbies like playing soccer.
When he was 14, Mingyu became really interested in music and started dreaming of becoming an idol. His family supported him completely even moving to South Korea to help him chase his dream. His dad took him to many auditions, but he was rejected every time. After a year of trying and failing, Mingyu started to lose confidence in himself and gave up on becoming an idol.
But a few months later, something unexpected happened, he was scouted by Touch Entertainment. That moment gave him hope again. He joined as a trainee and spent the next four years working hard to improve. Mingyu stayed focused and never gave up, growing into the artist he is today.
Pre-Debut[]
Before debut Touch Entertainment posted many clips of him and other trainees dancing, singing and rapping out of all of them people were trying to find out who was behind that mask and when he would debut.
Many fans tried to figure out his identity and some finally succeeded. Cho Mingyu was finally revealed to the public the mystery trainee that every was urging to see was here. Touch Entertainment decided to debut Mingyu solo for an unknown reason leaving the other trainees with 5 members left.
Career[]
2022[]
On February 23, Cho Mingyu debuted under the stage name MIIX with the single “WAITING.” While the song didn’t reach the popularity of some other debuts at the time, it was considered a strong start, and MIIX quickly gained attention within the K-pop community. His fanbase began to grow rapidly, earning him recognition as a rising solo artist.
Just weeks later, on April 3, MIIX released his second single album, Love me Harder, which included the title track of the same name and “Kiss of Fire” featuring Xavier Luna. The release marked a breakthrough moment for MIIX, “Love Me Harder” became a hit in South Korea, earning him two music show wins and his first Real Time All Kill.
Soon after, it was announced that MIIX would return on May 5 with his first full length album, S. The title track gained major traction overseas, going viral on TikTok and helping MIIX break into the American market. S recorded his highest album sales at the time and performed strongly in Korea as well.
On October 22, he returned with his first mini album, High Up, continuing his upward trajectory.
2023[]
On February 20, MIIX released the single album What Just Happened. While the album saw a significant jump in sales, its chart performance was more modest.
He followed it up with his second mini album JELLY, released on May 10, featuring collaborations with Chen Wang and Gao. The album further showcased his musical range and collaborative spirit.
On July 7, MIIX dropped his first digital single, Don't Go Yet, fast paced, Latin inspired track that showed a different side of his artistry.
Later in the year, on October 7, MIIX won Asiavision Song Contest 2023 with his performance of “Jelly Pop,” solidifying his place as one of the year’s standout solo artists.
2024[]
After over a year without a major comeback, Touch Entertainment announced MIIX’s return with a new mini album, I have a thing, scheduled for release on August 16. Teasers, including a concept trailer and album cover, created major buzz.
Upon release, the I Have a Thing music video gained 26 million views in 24 hours, and the album sold 184,000 copies on its first day, breaking MIIX’s personal records. The title track reached #1 on the BE.LIV Chart for one week and held the #2 spot for two additional weeks.
The album’s repackage, It’s ok, i’m ok, became one of MIIX’s most successful comebacks to date. It sold over 170,000 copies and surpassed 100 million streams, with the title track peaking at #1 on multiple charts.
2025[]
On January 3, MIIX began teasing his second full-length album M,XOXO with a pre-release single titled “I LUV IT,” which officially dropped on January 15. The track received mixed reviews it was praised for its catchiness but criticized by some netizens for “nonsensical” lyrics and a repetitive structure. Despite the backlash, the song peaked at #1 on the BE.LIV Chart and remained for three weeks, showing strong public interest.
The full album M,XOXO was released on January 20, led by the title track “Chanel No.5.” Like “I LUV IT,” it drew mixed reactions, particularly for its heavy use of autotune and experimental sound. However, the album was recognized for showing a more mature and expressive side of MIIX and received positive attention in the U.S. market. While “Chanel No.5” didn’t match the chart success of its pre-release, it performed well overall and marked a bold step forward in his artistic evolution.
On April 2, MIIX released his third single album, Bluest Flame, led by the title track of the same name. Serving as a spiritual sequel to M,XOXO, the album featured unreleased tracks originally intended for that project. While Bluest Flame didn’t match the chart performance or sales of M,XOXO, it was still considered a commercial success and resonated strongly with fans.
