━ MERAVI |
MERAVI (Korean: 메라비) is a seven-member South Korean boy group currently under LILAC Studios. They debuted on January 11, 2023 with their first mini album MERAVIRUS, and the title track "Midnight Adventure".
History[]
2022: Pre-debut, "Good Night"[]
On July 5, LILAC Studios released a group poster with the words, "January 2023". The following day on July 6, LILAC released another group poster with the words, "Are you ready to meet MERAVI?". The company also revealed, via the tweet with the group poster and via their official website, that a new member would be revealed monthly. On July 11, Lin Jianyu was announced as the group's first member, followed by Lee Seungwoo on August 11 and Ryu Doyum on September 11. On September 15, LILAC uploaded a video disclosing how the group will officially promote as a septet and that the added member will be revealed on September 24. On this day, the added member was revealed to be former Star Maker X 101 contestant, Won Kyungjun. The member reveals continued after Min Hyundong was announced as the group's fifth member on October 11, followed by Qiao Ling on November 11 and lastly, Kimura Hideki on December 11.
On December 4, LILAC shared that the group would be dropping a "surprise" for Christmas. On December 11, after Hideki's reveal, LILAC confirmed that the group had actually been busy preparing a non-promotional Christmas single. The pre-debut single, titled "Good Night" was released on December 12, receiving attention for the song's calm yet festive sound. Some were even quick to dub the group as "up-and-coming Christmas princes".
2023: Debut with MERAVIRUS, "Bloom", vication, "So Wonderful"[]
On December 16, 2022 it was confirmed that MERAVI's debut was planned for January 11, 2023. On this day, the group's debut mini album, MERAVIRUS, was released, garnering attention for the empowering messages each song held. Eleven days later, on January 22, the group's official fandom name, Meracle, was announced alongside the fandom colours.
On February 14, Valentine's Day, the group released a surprise special single titled "Bloom". Although the group did not attend any music programs to promote this single, they managed to gain attention for their vocals—particularly their harmonisations.
On May 28, it was confirmed by LILAC that the group would be making a comeback on June 30, 2023. On June 30, the group's second EP, vication, was released. The album's lead single, "U ___ ME" (read aloud as "you complete me"), quickly became loved by fans and was even lightheartedly dubbed by Meracles on social media platforms as "2023's summer SOTY". The album garnered an estimated 3,800 more sales than their debut album and saw three other songs on the album charting, unlike their debut release which only saw the lead single, "Midnight Adventure", charting. "U ___ ME" brought the group their first music show win on MBS Rankdown and a win on Smile Groove Music Show the same day member Doyum became the show's Q3 special MC.
On December 8, LILAC confirmed that the group would be dropping their second non-promotional Christmas single on December 12. "So Wonderful", planned for release on the same date which the group's 2022 single "Good Night" was released on, marks the beginning of an annual MERAVI Christmas tradition.
2024: To Be, concert participation, "Opposites Attract", Our Playlist, "My Snowman, Don't Melt"[]
On January 17, it was confirmed by LILAC that the group would be making their second comeback on March 31, 2024. On March 31, the group's first studio album, To Be, was released. The release of their first studio album following around 9 months without a comeback pushed MERAVI to see relatively new heights, especially with To Be garnering an estimated 11,900 more sales than their 2023 EP, vication. The studio album's lead single "Dreamweaver" peaked at #14 on the Circle Digital Chart for the week ending April 13, surpassing their previous peak of #23 on the chart—for their debut single "Midnight Adventure". The album was not only a numerical success for the boys, but it was also heavily complimented for its incorporation of various genres, its accomplished utilisation of highly-acclaimed music producers, and its successful show of the members' strengths through unit songs.
The success of MERAVI's To Be era pulled many new fans to the group. Riding on their success, MERAVI participated in several concerts and festivals, including KCON Japan 2024, Busan One Asia Festival, and K-Paradise Seoul & You, where they were praised by fans and concert-goers for their improvement in stability when performing live, as compared to their nervous debut live vocals. Furthermore, the members undertook solo activities and schedules, such as magazine modelling, producing and choreographing with and for other idols, acting gigs, etc, all while remaining active on their social media—strengthening their fanbase loyalty tenfold.
On October 6, LILAC Studios confirmed that the septet would be making their third comeback on November 13, 2024. On October 7, during the release of the comeback scheduler, it was revealed that MERAVI would first be releasing a pre-release single by the name of "Opposites Attract". The pre-release single was digitally released via streaming platforms on October 18, 2024. "Opposites Attract" was later revealed to be a strong contender for the upcoming album's title track. The pre-release single was promoted on music shows and became a trending sound on video platform TikTok, hence it charted quite high in several countries including South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore.
Following the album's successful pre-release single "Opposites Attract", the group officially made their comeback on November 13 with their second studio album, Our Playlist. With a total of 111,022 first week sales, Our Playlist garnered an estimated 31,000 more first week sales than their previous album, To Be, and became MERAVI's first release to surpass 100,000 sales in the first week. Our Playlist quickly became MERAVI's most successful release to date. The album's lead single "Slam The Door" peaked at #13 on the Circle Digital Chart—their highest chart position for a single. Additionally, the remaining eleven songs also charted on the Bugs Daily Chart during the album's promotion period—the first time the septet have had an entire album's tracklist chart simultaneously. "Slam The Door" went on to receive 5 music program wins, including MERAVI's first wins on both Hallyumak and Battleground K: Music Dojang!. Overall, the album was the subject of overwhelmingly positive critique, with several critics applauding the cinematography of the album's music videos, the album's concept, and the members' involvement.
On December 9, LILAC confirmed that the group would be releasing their third non-promotional Christmas single, continuing the annual MERAVI Christmas tradition. The third instalment in their series of "Merachri" (a portmanteau of MERAVI and Christmas) singles, "My Snowman, Don't Melt", was released on December 12, but did not chart higher than their 2023 Christmas single, "So Wonderful".

Etymology and concept[]
On September 7, 2022, fans noticed how the group name's official meaning had been tweaked. With the use of the "VI" to represent the number of members being changed (see below for current meaning), fans began to suspect LILAC was adding members to the originally-planned six piece group.
“ | To perform a task with Meraki is to perform a task with absolute love, passion and devotion. Wishing their Meraki grows vividly, MERAVI will be a group of aspiring artists aiming to put the essence of themselves into all they do to spread love and happiness. | ” |
━ LILAC Studios (September 7, 2022) |
With this being the official meaning of MERAVI's name, it has since become noticeable that the lyrics the group puts out circles back to the concept of supporting their listeners by spreading love, happiness and hope.
Influences[]
MERAVI have collectively stated several groups as having influenced their creative direction as MERAVI. The 2 groups which have never failed to be mentioned by the members of MERAVI, when they are asked for their greatest inspirations, are 6topia and EMERGE. The members' admiration for these two groups stems from Jianyu being a Utopian, and Hyundong being a Crystaline—whereby their fanboy fanatics drew the entire team's attention towards both 6topia and EMERGE's consistent ability to incorporate meaningful lyrics and music in their predominantly self-produced repertoires, and both of the groups' musical and conceptual ingenuity.
