Myeongseong Broadcasting System (MBS) is one of the leading South Korean television and radio broadcasters, founded in November 1990. The network's current advertising slogan since 2015 is Together moving into the Digital Age. as used in a new station identification video.
MBS is currently the largest private broadcaster in South Korea and is partially owned by Pilico Corporation Korea [1]. It operates its flagship television channel which has a nationwide network of 8 regional stations and two radio networks. Its flagship station, MBS1, is a station focused on music and entertainment while offering several news and education related programs. MBS1's dramas have been an influential force in the "Korean Wave (Hallyu)", exported to many countries across the world; it is also credited as Korea's primary gateway to international music, film and television during the 1990s and 2000s. Since 2017, MBS1 has been available to foreign viewers through a 24/7 YouTube live stream.
HISTORY[]
Myeongseong Broadcasting System was established in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea following South Korea's democratic reform under the administration of President Roh Tae-woo, beginning radio broadcasts in March 1991 and television broadcasts in December 1991 [1]. Typical programming during its early months included news programs, sports competition broadcasts, as well as re-runs of previously released films from both South Korea and overseas. In the following years, the channel's programming would continue expanding into diverse fields, from investigative journalism documentaries and political discussion shows to music countdowns and celebrity talk shows, appealing to a public eager for more diverse and critical media content in the post-authoritarian era. Initially, the channel only aired within the Seoul metropolitan area, but the company began expanding into regional stations in four other provinces in the country to decentralize its national reach.
In January 2002, Myeongseong Broadcasting System, as part of rising advancements in broadcasting, decided to launch high-definition television (HDTV) services. Furthermore, the channel began expanding to make its content comprehensively available on the internet, including archives of past news articles. In an eager attempt to ride with the growing Hallyu wave, the corporation began increasingly investing in local entertainment programming such as romantic dramas, soap operas, and K-pop audition shows.

Top Request Hour[]

Top Request Hour is a South Korean television program broadcast on MBS which premiered on January 1992 as one of the channel's earliest programs. Heavily inspired by American music chart show Dial MTV, the original variant of the show played the top 20 most popular music videos of the week, as requested by viewers across the country through telephone dial. At its peak, the show was largely popular among the young adult demographic and was credited for cementing numerous artists and music videos into public consciousness.
Though largely declining in viewership with the advent of internet and streaming services in the late 2000s and 2010s, the show instead remained on air, being relegated to a late night timeslot from 2014 to 2021 and also remaining as a morning rush hour radio program every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on MBS Radio 1. Its audience demographic also shifted to the older generation of Koreans, many of which grew up with the show. Following the rise of early 2000s nostalgia in the 2020s, MBS released full episodes of Top Request Hour in its TRH Archive channel and reverted to a Y2K-based theme, bringing renewed interest in the program.

The company began scouting trainees in the following months and thus was able to form its first girl group, G-Girls, which debuted sometime in late 2008. G-Girls maintained a relatively successful career over the following years, before ultimately disbanding in the mid-2010s.
In January 2013, Picture Music debuted their new girl group Purple Jacket, consisting of four members, some of which had already worked as backup dancers for certain K-pop acts. Purple Jacket disbanded in February 2016 due to a combination of lack of commercial success and the members being no longer interested in pursuing a career as a team. Around the same time period, the company started redirecting its resources to debuting male artists instead of girl groups, leading to the debut of boy group HEART2HEART in February 2016.
In 2022, Picture Music officially announced that they were collaborating with LO Entertainment to debut a new girl group, with some members being revealed to have previously participated in winter reality talent program Star Maker 101.
