History[]
In 2012, former guitarist of the Korean rock band LOVELY EYES Lee Byeolwon announced his intentions to establish his own company. He wanted to create an entertainment company that could capitalize on the start of the 3rd generation of K-pop. Lee received financial assistance from one of LOVELY EYES’ former sponsors, conglomerate CEO Park Jiseon, in 2013 when Park was made aware of Lee’s announcement. He provided Lee with a leased studio and practice room, as well as enough funds to hold auditions and form a group. Park stated that he had been a fan of Lee’s for many years and wanted to see him succeed.
BrightPalette Entertainment was officially established in 2014. The first audition for trainees was held from March 2014 until April 2014. This audition yielded a handful of trainees, and BrightPalette Entertainment began planning their first group.
Crystal Shine was formed in June 2014 with Siana, Tasumi, Chaeseung, Isabelle, and Haeyeon. The five piece girl group made their debut in August, making them direct rivals to Royalz, who debuted around two weeks before them and found similar amounts of success. This sparked a rivalry between BrightPalette Entertainment and Royalz’s company StarLight Entertainment that became a source of entertainment and motivation for the fans of both groups.
In 2015, Lee decided to debut a band, and gathered five trainees who all showed an interest in performing as a band rather than idols. Vibrant, formed with Liya, Chaeyoon, Myungtae, Zandra, and Seohyun, debuted on July 17th, 2015 as a girl band.
Crystal Shine and Vibrant both showed promise to become popular artists. Crystal Shine thrived off of their rivalry with Royalz, despite the other group finding more success. Vibrant was growing their fanbase within the K-rock sphere and were decently successful for a lesser known K-rock band.
In 2016, Lee was told about StarLight Entertainment forming a new girl group for a 2017 debut. He decided to follow their footsteps in order to fuel the rivalry, and chose nine trainees to debut in a new group. FreshNeon was comprised of Hyeseon, Yuhyun, Jihoon, Harriet, Shimizu, Eunhyung, Wonsoo, Xiu, and Taerin. Lee wanted the group to be seen as BrightPalette Entertainment’s flagship group. The group debuted in the month after StarLight Entertainment’s new group Sequoia, on May 8th, 2017, to less success than their immediate rivals.
Lee stepped down as CEO and head producer in late 2017, as he felt that the company needed different leadership in order to move to the 4th generation of K-pop. Im Juseong was appointed as CEO and head producer. Im’s first announcement as CEO was an internal survival show with the goal of creating the company’s first boy group. IdolPaint began airing in 2018 and created the seven-piece group Tasakaal, who debuted in August 2019. The group consisted of Junhan, Minjoon, Francis, Yong, Osamu, Yunshim, and Shuren. Tasakaal proved to be less successful than BrightPalette Entertainment’s previous debuts. The company as a whole, bar Vibrant, was seeing a slight decline in relevancy and popularity.
Im Juseong suddenly departed as the CEO and head producer in 2019, citing a distaste for the position. Fans blamed Im for the company’s falling popularity and accused him of jumping ship. They were also displeased with Im allowing two 14-year-olds to debut in Tasakaal and showed concern for minors in the company. Min Hyojun was chosen for the CEO role, while Park Seran was moved into the head producer role. Min decided to debut nine other trainees who participated on IdolPaint in a rival group to StarLight Entertainment’s new group Attune. Hibiscus was made of Seungwoo, Sungjin, Kou, Yejoon, Hunter, Chee, Hyunwoo, Xue, and Jisub. StarLight Entertainment agreed to treat Attune and Hibiscus like a joint project in order to promote both groups, with the two groups collaborating for several videos for social media. Hibiscus debuted on January 7th, 2020, only a few months after Tasakaal debuted. While joint project partner Attune was immediately successful after their March debut, Hibiscus struggled.
In 2021, several BrightPalette Entertainment trainees were popular enough to be voted into the debut group from Idolix. Minju, Jihyung, and Xiuying debuted in ix-cite in February 2021.
In the middle of 2021, Min Hyojun stepped down as CEO to pursue other ventures. His replacement was Kim Wonyeong. Crystal Shine decided to renew their contracts.
In early 2022, after discussions with the members, the mutual decision was made for Tasakaal and Hibiscus to disband. The members felt like their groups’ combined low success was dragging the company down by wasting resources, and Kim felt that by disbanding the groups, he could focus on bringing Crystal Shine and FreshNeon back into the public eye. The disbandments were immediate, and BrightPalette Entertainment announced that they would let the members stay under the company until they found new companies. The members would be appropriately compensated for their contract termination.
Vibrant started contract talks in 2021. The renewal talks fell through after Tasakaal and Hibiscus’s disbandments. Vibrant officially disbanded in July 2022 when their initial seven-year contract was finished.
Amidst the commotion within the company, BrightPalette Entertainment found success in survival shows in 2022. Kang Haegyu was a contestant on Search The Cosmos. Bui Quy participated in Project Euphoria. Haegyu debuted as a member of QUANTUM and Quy debuted as a member of IMMORPHIA in April 2022.
In 2023, Crystal Shine and FreshNeon both announced their disbandments. Crystal Shine had decided to initially disband after their year-long renewed contract, but pushed their disbandment back due to Tasakaal and Hibiscus’s disbandment. FreshNeon’s disbandment was due to not renewing their contracts. After the disbandments of the two groups, BrightPalette Entertainment was left with no groups and only trainees. Bills and salaries were paid with Park Jiseon’s help, as he was still a major part of the company’s investors. Fans of BrightPalette Entertainment’s groups expressed outrage and disappointment at the company for all of their past failures that led to the disbandments of all of their groups. Park Seran left the head producer role. Kim Wonyeong was ousted from his CEO position. He was replaced by a long-time employee of BrightPalette Entertainment who had been vocal about her own disappointment with the company. Ahn Jomi was named both CEO and head producer.
On September 2nd, 2023, BrightPalette Entertainment changed their name to Lavande Entertainment. After silence for a few months, a Q&A video featuring nine anonymous people, assumed to be trainees, was posted to the company’s YouTube channel on January 14th, 2024. On January 30th, Lavande Entertainment announced their new group ey9 and revealed all nine members.
