Jeong Na-eun (정루비), better known as Lady Ruby, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, producer, and former idol singer. She made her debut in 2006, and has released 5 studio albums and 17 singles to date. She is one of the best-selling South Korean female rappers of all time.

Early life[]

Jeong Na-eun was born in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, South Korea on February 19, 1991 to a lower middle class household of fully Korean descent; she has an older sister named Kim Ahryung.

Career[]

In June 2006, Lady Ruby released her debut studio album Ruby’s Regulations. The album initially had minimal commercial impact with less than 2,000 CDs sold, but started picking up scene within the South Korean hip-hop community after tracks such as "Miss C.E" and "Faceless Queen" were spread and actively talked about on music discussion websites. As a result, she began to promote herself in music programs and radio shows over the next few months, gradually becoming well known to audiences.
In May 2009, Lady Ruby released her second studio album Dumb, Bad, and Mad. The album was more old school and less pop-oriented than her debut record, which included her throwing aggressive disses at entertainment industry figures that had disrespected her over the last two years. While her increasingly explicit persona received polarized reactions from tabloids and netizens, her album received positive reviews from music critics, who described her as the hottest female rapper at the moment. Her underground and self-supported upbringing was compared to the idol rappers that were being pushed out by K-pop companies, many of which were simply forced to take on the position just to have a significant presence in sings.
In September 2012, Lady Ruby announced that she had decided to leave her record label after almost five years of being with them. In a deleted Facebook post, she later accused the CEO of the company of trying to get her blackballed and also paying trolls to make defamatory claims about her personal life, allegations that the executive in question denied. However, despite the sabotage campaign that was reportedly being conducted, Ruby continued to work on making music, later announcing that she will be releasing a new full-length record within the next two years.
In September 2014, Lady Ruby independently released her third studio album Crown With Thorns. The album rollout was particularly controversial, as religious netizens pointed out that one of the photoshoots, seemed “blasphemous” and disrespectful to Christians. She later responded to the accusations, in which she clarified that the photo was meant to depict her as a witch prepared to be burnt at the stake rather than crucified at a cross, symbolizing the carnage unleashed by the entertainment industry that female celebrities around the world suffer from. However, the damage had already been done, as her reputation took a moderate hit and she reported receiving death threats from anonymous individuals over her quote-unquote problematic actions. Nonetheless, the album received positive comments from critics and music journalists, earning a nomination for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album at the 2014 Hangang Artistry Awards.
In November 2018, approximately a year after signing with record label 24D Entertainment, Lady Ruby released her fourth studio album Villain.
In June 2024, Lady Ruby teamed up with Takamura Sukima of BEAUDENT and Shin Wooseong to release the collaborative rap single “SNOB!”. The single became her most commercially successful project in years, introducing her to a new generation of listeners.
In July 2024, Lady Ruby released the single album Affidavit, which consisted of 4 tracks including "SNOB!". It was nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album at the 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards. On the other hand, "SNOB!" later won Best Urban/Hip-Hop Song at the 2024 Shining Groove Awards.

Personal life[]

In 2007, Lady Ruby publicly criticized the Hangang Artistry Awards for its perceived disrespect and underrepresentation of female rappers and musicians: "I'm tired of pretending to not be bothered. Nobody wants to say the quiet part out loud, but this ceremony is becoming nothing but a mutual patting-on-the-back between decaying old men who think they know what real music is. Female rappers, underground rappers, they can make the most poetic and socially conscious body of work ever but they will get shut out because Hangang doesn't actually care about or give respect to the art of hip-hop." Ruby's second studio album, Dumb, Bad, & Mad, would later receive six nominations including Album of the Year at the 2009 Hangang Artistry Awards.

Ruby Jeong has been accused by right-wing conservative male forum communities of supporting the 4B feminist movement, leading to unsuccessful boycott campaigns against the label and its artist. In 2024, Jeong addressed the rumors, saying: "It's amusing how people will create their own interpretations of me despite the fact that I rarely disclose my personal stances on socio-political matters. Don't get me wrong though, I harbor no negative sentiments for the movements everyone has been associating me with. Could you blame the women that rally behind these movements when we have lived with intense sexual, social, and psychological oppression under the gender roles enforced by our patriarchal society?"
