Kim Sungwon (김성원) is a South Korean singer and model. He is best known as a member of Anomii, formed through the reality competition program Into The Spotlight.

Early life[]

Kim Sung-won was born on February 1, 2007 in Muan County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. Raised in a lower-middle-class household, his mother was employed at a local government office, while his father was the manager of a grocery store in their neighborhood. He is the middle child of three siblings, having an older sister and a younger brother. His family lived in a typical family-unit apartment complex, leading a typical upbringing of a South Korean child. His daily routine included additional cram school classes during selected weekday evenings, as his parents wanted him to have exceptional grades and become a doctor or a pilot- they ultimately had a change of heart and just pushed him to be successful in pursuing the aspirations that he wanted.

Prior to entering the entertainment industry, Sung-won wanted to grow up to be a medical scientist as he "wanted to help find a cure to cancer", after his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer when was 7. However, struggling academic grades discouraged him from anything STEM-related, and he instead started aspiring to be a content creator or a television personality. A relative recommended to his mother that he should be an actor or a model due to his good looks, but Sung-won preferred not to as he was an evidently awkward and stiff kid. Being a K-pop idol was never his dream as he thought he would make the worst dancer in the world, but his future had different plans for him as he was scouted by a Jellyfish Entertainment representative while on a day trip with his mother to Seoul in 2020. After sending a vocal clip of him performing holiday song "Santa, Won't You Hear Me?", he was admitted into the company, where he trained as part of a prospective boy group project until he dropped out in early 2023.

Career[]

2025[]

In 2025, Kim Sungwon competed in the survival audition program Into The Spotlight, representing Picture Music alongside Ahn Mingyu, Bong Seongri, and Kim Sooil. In the Individual Evaluation round, the Picture Music trainees performed RIIZE's "Love 119", but unfortunately, he was the only member of their team to not receive a star due to his sub-par dancing skills and short lines throughout the performance. He also remained in the Starless class following the Signal Song Evaluation, and was eventually one of the few trainees left behind during the formation of groups in the Girl Group Song Battle round. In that round, he performed LE SSERAFIM's "Crazy" as their center, and received praise for his improvement in terms of dancing and confidence. He unexpectedly ranked 1st, beating out his more known peers in the group. In the Position Battle round, he performed QWER's "Discord", showcasing his potential as a vocalist. Unfortunately, their team lost, and during the second evaluation, he narrowly escaped elimination after ranking 20th place, or the cutoff. In the Creative Concept Battle, he performed "In The Same Place, Same Time", and was supposed to be the main vocalist but backed down after having an unstable performance in the rehearsals. His team won, giving him a vote benefit of 40,000 votes and shooting him to 8th place in the third elimination round. By the time Into the Spotlight was in its last few episodes, Sungwon had been receiving significant push from Korean audiences due to his hardworking and friendly attitude, as well as Southeast Asian fans from his wholesome friendship with foreign trainee Benjamin Castro. In the finale, Sungwon would arguably become the season's most unexpected winner, ranking 5th place with 754,263 votes and becoming part of the debut lineup Anomii, despite never entering the top 7 throughout the show.

Personal life[]

Kim Sungwon is an actively practicing Buddhist.

Following the conclusion of Into The Spotlight, Sungwon confessed to experiencing mental health issues throughout the show, as hate comments from netizens, particularly international fans who were angry that their favorite picks did not make it to the lineup, took a toll on his self-esteem and almost made him contemplate to not sign the contract and withdraw. However, he was able to feel better after receiving assurance from the members that they wouldn't trade him for any other contestant, and that he earned his spot as someone who started as a low-ranking contestant in the show. He has also opened up about regularly meeting a therapist in between group schedules.

Despite being the maknae of Anomii, one couldn't easily tell that Kim Sungwon is the youngest, due to his mature and reserved personality. During Into The Spotlight, Sungwon was initially off the radar of most viewers not only due to his lack of screentime, but also his quiet demeanor. While he gained his popularity through his soft visuals, which appeals to the Korean beauty standards, he has consistently worked hard to improve his skills, and proven his growth through all of his evaluation performances. He is also an open-minded person who values connecting with other people who have different upbringings or perspectives, as seen in his frequent interactions with foreign trainees especially his eventual groupmates Hong Heonbo and Benjamin Castro. Overall, Sungwon is someone who does not limit himself to his comfort zone, willing to take any kinds of opportunities for self-development and nurturing his relationships with others.

Controversies[]

Kim Sungwon was spotted by an anonymous account clubbing with three women at a club in Itaewon in May 2025. The club was traditionally known for having a disproportionately large number of LGBTQIA+ partygoers.
