Hoyeon (호연), also known by the stage name Yoo Taehui (유태희) as an actress, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, actress, and film director under Herotainment. She made her solo debut on August 5, 2023, with her self-titled digital EP Hoyeon.
Early Life[]
Hoyeon was born on June 2, 2000, in Gwangju, South Korea, to a family with father (Ryu Jaewook), mother (Kim Hyunyeon), and a older brother (Ryu Youngjun). Growing up, Hoyeon was living a rather average life, studying hard to get into a good college, as well as pursuing a hobby in the performing arts.
She was scouted by Herotainment sometime in 2020.
Career[]
2020: Actress debut[]
On March 20, 2020, through a cast reveal, it was revealed that Hoyeon, under the name Yoo Taehui, would be making her acting debut in the horror movie The Lake near the House. The movie was released on June 20 of the same year but unfortunately did not perform well. However, Taehui was praised for her acting abilities, with critics noting that "Debut actress Taehui had made the entire movie watchable with her acting, and she has a bright future in acting." She acted in various movies through 2020 and 2021.
2022: Directorial debut[]
On June 20, at only 22 years old, news reported that Taehui would be making her directorial debut, directing the horror movie The Killer's Best Friend - Just Us Together. The film was released on October 30, 2022, with the movie getting positive reviews from critics, with an average rating of 9.1/10.
2023: Solo debut with Hoyeon[]
On July 8, it was reported that Taehui, under her birth name Hoyeon, would be making her solo debut with her self-titled digital EP Hoyeon, set to be released sometime in August of 2023. On July 25, 2023, it was announced the album would be released on August 5.
Personal Life[]
Acting break[]
On November 30, 2022, it was reported that Taehui would be going on a break from acting for 5 months. The reasons were that she was mentally exhausted from acting, and wanted to "take a step back and recharge". She resumed acting on April 30, 2023.
Coming out[]
On June 20, 2022, Taehui posted on her official Instagram account, with her holding a pride flag. The caption read that for a while, she had been interested in women and eventually dated one for 5 months before separating due to personal circumstances. She ended off the announcement by saying "I am proud to come out and say that I am a proud lesbian. Fuck y'all who hate me because I love women, I don't care either way." The post received massive amounts of positively, with every comment supporting her coming out.
