Yang Hee-ra (born January 12, 1992), known professionally as Heera, is a South Korean rapper, composer, and singer-songwriter. She first emerged in the entertainment industry as a member of idol girl group SeoulDolls. Following the group's disbandment, she signed with 24D Arts made her solo debut on October 11, 2021 with the mixtape 1992112. Her sound primarily consists of hip hop, house, and R&B.

Heera is the recipient of 9 nominations at the Hangang Artistry Awards, including a win for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album. She was also nominated for Best Queen at the HKRT Year End Awards 2024.

ABOUT 히라[]

Information was partially written by AllisonHargreeves, the original creator of Yang Heera.

Yang Hee-ra was born on December 1, 1992 in Incheon, South Korea. When Heera was younger, she did gymnastics and was quite a sporty girl. Heera played soccer and basketball for her local teams, and as a gymnast, reached the level 10 of gymnastics before quitting so that she could pursue training as an idol trainee under YG Entertainment. When she was 19, she transferred from YG Entertainment to UKIYO Entertainment, where she was placed in a four-member pre-debut team that came to be known as SeoulDolls. Her audition tape was a vocal cover of D.Y.E's 1990 single "Ironic", and a dance cover of DJ Sammy, Yanou, & Do's 2001 dance track "Heaven". While a trainee, she began to show interest in rapping, largely influenced by a musician friend introducing her to Lauryn Hill's 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In a 2021 interview, she revealed that her trainee period was "tough and traumatizing", detailing experiences such as competing with other female trainees, weekly weight checks, and even problematic employees.

Sometimes, I wonder how I was able to endure all of these living conditions. I wish I could say that I wish I didn't take this career path instead, but in this country, there are only limited options to be a full time musician while also being able to meet your basic needs. Knowing how much I wanted a life aligned with my passions, I would have definitely still tried to be an idol, even if I knew to myself that these conditions aren't right. And that's the sad truth of it all.

Heera in 2021

SeoulDolls made their debut on March 27, 2014 with the mini album New to Soul. Ever since their debut, Heera had accumulated the strongest individual popularity in the group, earning television hosting gigs as well as brand endorsements.

In September 2020, SeoulDolls officially announced their disbandment after almost two years of inactivity. She left UKIYO Entertainment and signed with independent record label 24D in February 2021, where she revealed that she will be pursuing a career as a solo musician and that "she had a lot of stories to tell". She spent the next few months creating her music, while also committing to other gigs such as beauty brand endorsements, modeling for magazines, and supporting roles in web dramas.

Heera in 2024

On May 10, 2021, Heera appeared as a feature rapper in underground hip-hop group Yongsan Tenement Collective's single "The Greatest Showgirl", which is a song that critiques the unrealistic expectations that celebrities, particularly female figures, have to live up to in the entertainment industry. Her brutally honest and upfront verses received critical acclaim from music critics, leading her to capitalize on the hype by spoiling unreleased titled "They'll Never Stop Me" and "Multifarious". In August 2021, Heera revealed that she was working on a rap record, wanting to showcase the maximum of her main talent that was still restrained by the K-pop songs that she performed as a member of SeoulDolls. Heera's determination to express her artistry paid off, as on October 11, 2021, Heera was finally able to release her debut mixtape 1992112, consisting of 8 tracks. The album received critical acclaim for its funky beats and witty lyricism, leading her to become the dark horse of the prestigious 2021 Hangang Artistry Awards after receiving nominations for Album of the Year, Best Rap Performer, Best New Artist, Best Hip-Hop Recording, and Best Hip-Hop Album.

In February 2022, Heera teased a new music project, which she described as "something that the former SeoulDolls fans will really like." On June 6, 2022, she released the dance pop single album Unleash The Pleasure, featuring the lead single of the same name. The lead single was well-received by music critics and included by Billboard in their Top 25 Best K-pop Songs of 2022. On April 23, 2023, Heera released her second mixtape Under The Impression You Care on streaming platforms. The single album consists of 3 tracks including the lead single "Sugary Attraction".

On February 19, 2024, Heera released her second studio album Questions and Pipelines, which features a concept that is inspired by the aesthetics of old Korean television shows. The album is supported by the lead single of the same name, and also includes pre-released singles "Dare to Believe" and "Figure It Out", the latter of which achieved moderate virality in South Korea after being performed at a music festival. The album was nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Recording and Best Album Arrangement/Composition at the 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards.

PERSONAL LIFE[]

Heera dated rapper and former Lava.B member Yoon Han-gyeom from August 2020 to May 2021, but broke up due to undisclosed reasons; it was later alleged that they had blocked each other on social media platforms.
