Han Yul (한율) is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actor. He is best known as a former member of NEVE and Solviz, the latter of which was formed through reality talent competition Sol Puzzle. He made his solo debut in June 2024 with the studio album Say Yul Love Me.

Early life[]

Han Yul was born on December 28, 2001 in the island of Ulleungdo, east of mainland South Korea. His mother runs an ice cream stall in the town center while his father is a fisherman. Despite dreaming to be a scientist or a chemical engineer when he was a child, joining small talent contests in his community increased a desire in him to pursue a music or arts related career.
As a high school student, he was involved in regional dance competitions, three of which his troupe became the champion of.
Yul's dreams of becoming a K-pop singer started when he became a young fanboy of girl groups T-ara and Thrice. In addition, he briefly had a YouTube channel that was active from 2014 to 2015, where he would post amateur cover videos, including one of Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" which reached 10,000 views.
In 2016, after watching hit survival program Produce 101 and supporting trainee Kim So-hye, Yul fully released his dream of becoming a singer and took the first major step to achieving his dream in the entertainment industry by taking the hard decision of moving from the island to hustle in the bustling and hypercompetitive environment of Seoul, with the guidance of his relatives.
He applied for agencies such as FNC Entertainment, Heaven's Entertainment, AURA Creative, and Jellyfish Entertainment, in which he passed the first round of auditions but did not receive a call back from any of them.

Career[]

2017[]

In 2017, Yul made his first appearance in the K-pop industry after appearing as a contestant in Capsize survival show INFINITEEZ: The Reverse Project, where the public chooses to vote their favorite contestant out of 40 contestants through online voting and on-site voting . He gained substantial attention for his PR video, in which he described himself as a "natural ray of sunshine shining through the darkest times" and did a parody performance of APRIL's "Muah!". In the end, he finished at 18th place, failing to make it to the debut group INFIN81 and was eliminated.

2020-2021[]

After two years of returning to life as a private citizen, Yul re-emerged in the entertainment industry after joining boy group NEVE under NEON Entertainment, after being introduced with a solo dance cover of The Score's "Unstoppable" and a vocal cover of "Señorita" by Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes. He promoted with the group as a member until their disbandment on February 1, 2021, when all of the members terminated their exclusive contracts after discussion with the agency.
Several months later, Yul was confirmed to be participating in survival program Sol Puzzle, in which 24 male idols that already had experience in the entertainment industry competed to be part of a globally promoted five-member boy group. During the first mission, the Up-Down Battle, Yul became notorious for his disastrous rendition of Finekiz's "No More Perfume on You", which became a viral meme clip. He would receive the lowest vote ratio of 2 upvotes to 21 downvotes, and was often compared by netizens to previous survival show contestants such as Kim Sohye or Ariyoshi Risa during Produce 101. However, this early failure worked in his favor, as he rode on an underdog storyline of gradual improvement and hardwork that impressed many viewers and gained him a loyal fanbase. At the end, he gradually rose in ranks and ended up debuting as a member of boy group SOLVIZ after placing 4th with 204,550 votes. SOLVIZ made their debut in November 2021.

2022-2023[]

In May 2022, Yul was revealed as a contestant of survival audition program Star Maker X 101 representing Bedlam Entertainment. Netizens were surprised at the news of his participation, who argued that he was too popular for the show and that it was unfair for him to compete again with trainees who are still desperately trying to debut. During the pilot episode of the show, Yul stated his intentions behind joining the program, which was to take the fast-paced environment of a survival show to improve drastically, as he felt like he was lagging behind in skill from the others. He had often seen negative criticism and hate thrown towards him as he frequently searches his name to have an idea of the general public's perception towards him; thus, he decided to take another individual challenge through joining another survival show to prove that he deserved to debut in SOLVIZ.
Bedlam later released a statement, denying accusations against the company of sending him for the intention of promoting his group to international audiences and rapidly increasing their fanbase. They confirmed that it was Yul's decision to participate in the show, and threatened legal action against anyone that was spreading misinformation and hate towards the artist. In the end, he was unable to make it to the top 22 finalists after being eliminated in the fourth evaluation round. After his elimination, he immediately returned to promotion as a member of SOLVIZ. By the time his journey in the competition had ended, his individual popularity among the general public had grown exponentially, causing him to receive offers to appear in various radio and variety shows.
In September, he appeared as a special panelist in the Mnet male dance competition show Street Man Fighter, and became a special MC for SBS Inkigayo.
In December 2022, Bedlam Entertainment confirmed that Yul will be debuting as a solo artist in January of next year. His debut single, "Carbon Copy Love", was released on January 6, 2023. Around the same time, his official fandom name, Yulsarang, was revealed.
In June 2023, it was confirmed that Yul will be participating in MBS singing competition The Other World, in which 10 male idols from various "new generation" boy groups who are not main vocalists will be competing through showcasing their vocal abilities that they have rarely shown before due to the role they play in their groups. The singer would consistently place in the top 3 throughout the show and eventually placed 1st, becoming the grand champion of the show and receiving the title of "Vocal King".

2024-present[]

On January 4, 2024, Yul was officially confirmed as the new MC of music program The Core Music Show alongside MIIX and FANC:Y's Seo Riah. A week after SOLVIZ's disbandment in April 2024, the singer announced that he had signed with BPC for solo activities.
On June 17, 2024, Yul released his first solo studio album Say Yul Love Me, supported by the lead single "Really Like You".
In January 2025, In response to the track's growing popularity, Yul released a remix of "Can We Ever Get Back Together?" featuring IMPGS member Lyubov Mel.
