Exo Planet 999: The Seeking (엑소 플래닛 999: 더 시킹), simply referred to as Exo Planet 999 (엑소 플래닛 999) is a survival show that was broadcasted in South Korea by Mnet. The show's goal was to produce a top global boy group that is practically "out of this world".
The show's first episode was broadcasted on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 and from there, the episodes were broadcasted every Tuesday with the total being 12 episodes with a few bonus episodes.
The final episode was released and aired on May 17, 2022 where the final lineup and debuting group was announced.
Concept[]
Exo Planet 999 was based on the two respective previous shows, Girls Planet 999 and Boys Planet 999. Once again the show was based on the themes and aesthetics of space where each of the three countries (Korea, China, Japan) are linked together as all three represent their own respective 'Exoplanet'. In addition to the three 'Exoplanets', there was a 'Executive Council' made up of the two 'K-pop Executives' whose roles were to solely mentor the 99 boys, three 'Vocal/Dance/Rap Executives' who trained the contestants' skills in three major skill components which consisted of vocal, dance, and rap. There was also the 'Planet Connector' who was the MC with the important role of connecting the viewers with the show and trainees. Outside of the 'Executive Council' were the fans and audience, also known as the 'Planet Seekers', who had the power of determining the ranks of each contestant and ultimately the outcome of the final debut group in Exo Planet 999. The mobile app and web platform 'VOID' had the function of connecting the contestants and the 'Planet Seekers' through voting and being able to interact with several of the trainees online.
Background[]
Global auditions for the show started presumably on June 2021. Contestants were soon finalized after the show's official announcement on January 14, 2022 after a teaser was posted on the official broadcasting channel. There was also a small post teasing the new show to the media that was first posted on VOID and later on all SNS platforms.
On January 17, it was announced that the show would officially start airing in mid-February to April 2022. Though, on February 6, 2022, it was revealed through an official announcement that Exo Planet 999 would actually air on March 1 at 9:00 PM KST instead.
On February 16, the official performance video for the show's theme song, "F.O.N.D" was posted on the broadcasting channel's official YouTube and on the VOID platform. It was also officially digitally released on all music platforms.

Episodes[]
Episode 1: Seeking (Let Us Find Our Dreams) (March 1, 2022)[]
Exo Planet 999 begins with the MC, Hyeji of GOAL explaining and introducing the concept of show and how it particularly correlates to space. One by one, the individual profiles of all 99 contestants are shown on the screen, showing their individual talents and charms. After, the performance video of the 99 contestants performing the show's official theme song, "F.O.N.D" is shown on screen once more.
As the intermission shortly ends, it cuts to the 99 contestants all separated together into their 'cells' which are grouped into 3.
Cell Arrangements[]
Simultaneously, all the cells enter the stage one by the other, the room quickly fills up with all the contestants sitting in their respective spots together with their cell. On the screen above the entrance, the theme show rankings in all three groups (K, C, J) are shown on screen from the 1 to the 33 rankings in each specific group.
Soon after that, the contestants are all in awe as the 'Executive Council' all enter the main stage. The council consists of the Planet Connector who serves as the show's official MC, the K-pop executives who are meant to be the mentors, and last but not least the V.D.R Executives who specialize in training and helping the contestants in three respective talent skills.
After the numerous introductions, it is announced to the 99 boys that the cell you are currently in will be your permanent cell unless you make it into the Judge's Planet Top 9 or choose to change your cell once the 'Planet Demo Stage' is over. It is shocking news but not surprising to the very least to the surplus of cells.
Finally the 'Planet Demo Stage' begins with the first latter of contestants performing their respective songs.
Performances[]
Episode 2: Seeking (I Want To Be In Your World) (March 8, 2022)[]
The second half of contestants continue to perform and thus the 'Planet Demo Stage' comes to a close. The camera cuts to the 'Executive Council' holding a council meeting as they begin to decide the first Planet Top 9. Later, the first Planet Top 9 were revealed [in order] Choi Jinyeong, Jeong Hancheol, Zhu Yating, Nakada Katsuro, Sugita Arata, Park Eunseong, Kim Hyuk, Kim Taewon and Chai Fang. The Planet Top 9 members were given the opportunity of creating new cells with the trainees of their choice. The remaining contestants were given the choice of unfortunately disbanding their initial cell and getting the chance of creating a new one, or staying in the same cell. Once the cell reshuffling was over, the contestants, in their new cells were sent to their respective dorms together.
The next day, the trainees awake to a 'Morning Mission' where they had to race to the building of Exo Planet 999. The lucky trainees who were able to get the message arrived early while the unlucky ones continued to sleep in at the dorm. Hyeji, the MC later revealed that the place you got in the race would determine what order your cell would be picking your respective song. (Ex: The person who ranked first, their cell would go first).
Soon, the next performance stage named the 'Bond Mission' was announced. The first three pre-selected songs for the mission are revealed to be, "Double Bubble Power", "Connection", "DANCE DANCE!". Meanwhile, the other three songs are hidden from the trainees. It was explained that in this mission, there would be 3 different cells performing a song together. Since the mission was similar to the previous season's, 'Connect Mission' the trainees were fine until the bizarre way of picking your song was revealed. This time, the song your cell first chose would not be permanent as there is a chance your spot could get taken by a higher ranking cell. The cells who were kicked out from their spot are forced to pick between one of the three hidden songs which are soon revealed to be, "Our Way To Go", "FLATTERER", "DA DA DA", and "UGH?!". The cells who were last in the order get to pick first, and thus the song picking continued on until all the spots were filled.
Episode 3: Bond (Opposites Attract After All) (March 15, 2022)[]
A notification shows up on screen urging the Planet Seekers to vote for their favorite cell.
Soon, as a surprise, the 'Executive Council' arrive at the practice building to evaluate the teams and determine the performance order. Instead of a dance battle, this time, the teams that do poorly during the evaluations will not be able to choose when they perform if deemed by the council. After the evaluations concluded, the order was revealed.
The 'Bond Mission' officially begins with the teams performing "Double Bubble Power" going first in the order. Later, the performances continue followed by the "DA DA DA" teams. The last performance is the "Our Way To Go" teams. The first three performances wrap up and it is announced that the winners in each group battle would be revealed once the mission is over. Soon, the next teams performing, "DANCE DANCE!" get ready to perform.
Episode 4: Bond (March 22, 2022)[]
The first cell rankings are announced to see which cells are safe and which are up for elimination.
The group performances continue with the "DANCE DANCE!" teams both performing, later continued by the "Connection" team. The last teams to perform are "FLATTERER" and "UGH?!" and soon the group song performances conclude as the MC announces the team that won in each respective song.
Song | Team 1 | = | Team 2 |
---|---|---|---|
Double Bubble Power | WIN | > | |
DA DA DA | < | WIN | |
Our Way To Go | WIN | > | |
DANCE DANCE! | WIN | > | |
R.S.T | Team 1 | N/A | N/A |
Connection | WIN | ||
FLATTERER | |||
UGH?! |
After the Bond Mission finally ends, it is announced to the trainees that only 69 contestants (22 cells + 3 Planet Pass survivors) will survive in the following episode which meant that 10 cells (30 contestants) would be unfortunately eliminated from the show.
Episode 5: Blast Off! (March 29, 2022)[]
The first ranking announcement officially begins. All the contestants are dressed in their theme song uniforms and are seated with their cell at the bottom of the main stage. Soon the top 21 cells are announced, with the cell consisting of Choi Jinyeong, Chai Fang, and Nakada Katsuro securing the first place rank with a total of 2,989,723 cell points.
In between the announcements, edited videos of the contestants are broadcasted on screen to ease the tension and atmosphere.
After the break was over, the last cell with the rank of 22 was revealed. It was announced that it would be Kyler Kim, Yang Lian, and Tanaka Jurou against You Songmin, He Yijun, Arima Takuto. After a long pause, the surviving cell was announced. The eliminated cell goes back to their respective spot and it is believed that the ranking announcement was over but it was suddenly revealed by the MC, Hyeji that there would be a Planet Pass occurring. The Planet Pass is a vote between the 'Executive Council' on which individual contestant to save from each three racial groups who were in cells that were unfortunately eliminated. The survivors are announced to be K-Group's Seo Yeonghwan, C-Group's He Yijun, and J-Group's Saito Yuuki.
Thus, all the 69 survivors of the first ranking announcement have been revealed. Following this, the second and new Planet Top 9 were also announced, [in order] Chai Fang, Nakada Katsuro, Yoshikawa Kichiro, Hai Daisang, Leung Guanting, Sun Zhou, Nakano Daigo, Choi Jinyeong, Jeong Hancheol.
