Chanwoo (찬우) is a South Korean singer, rapper, dancer and actor under M&A Entertainment. He is a member of the boy group Illusion.
Personal life[]
Chanwoo was born on February 5, 1998 in Buk-gu, Daegu, South Korea to a Korean father and a Korean mother. In early 2002, he and his family moved to Shinjuku City in Tokyo, Japan since his father owned an engineering branch that needed his attendance. He'd auditioned for M&A Entertainment online on April 7, 2015. A few days prior to May 8, 2015, the date of the second audition round, he and his family moved to Jung-gu in Seoul, South Korea since he had passed the global auditions, and since his older brother had been accepted into a university nearby. He officially became a trainee on May 15, 2015 along with 14 other auditionees.
He attended Yoyogi International School, where he learned to speak Japanese and English. He also attended Shinjuku Yamabuki High School but since his education was interrupted, Chanwoo graduated in 2017 at Hwanil High School alongside Eunsang.
Career[]
2021: Debut with Illusion, Not Perfect But Pretty[]
On April 24, Chanwoo was revealed as the third member of M&A Entertainment's newest boy group, Illusion. He made his official debut with the group on May 7, 2021 with their debut mini album Trust.
Chanwoo obtained his first drama role in July when he appeared as main character Park Seungh-won in Not Perfect But Pretty. This marked his debut as an actor.
2022: Smile Groove Music Show[]
On January 7, Chanwoo, along with NEORA's Soomin, hosted his first episode as an MC on the SGA IDOL music program, Smile Groove Music Show. It was revealed that they would be the MCs for the remainder of 2022.
Personality[]
With a very gentle and naturally caring personality, Chanwoo will often refer to himself as the "anchor" of Illusion. He often finds very subtle ways to look after the physical and mental health of his fellow members, describing his actions as a way of "allowing the members to have a returning point which will keep them stable, rather than cause them to stray adrift". He often puts his members' needs before his own because he sees it as his responsibility (especially since he's the eldest member) to ensure their health, safety and comfort before his own.
Chanwoo seldom loses his temper, and is the most calm and collected (as agreed by the members). He engages in occasional bickering with those who are close with him, his members for example, but tends to shy away from aggressive arguments even despite his own strong opinions. He's one to prefer calm debates for sure.
Strangely, Chanwoo feels more comfortable when he's around cameras and filming. Because of this, his on-screen moments are often louder than when he's not filming, since he feels comfortable enough to open up more than he usually does.
