Catalina Han Torres (born April 8, 1998), known mononymously as Catalina, is a Korean-American singer-songwriter.
Catalina began her music career in the American youth vocal group LILYanne under Top Hat Records. The group released a handful of hit songs from 2007 until 2012, including the 2011 pop chart-topping single "Silly Boy". Catalina returned to the music industry with her solo debut album "Torres" in 2017 as a K-pop artist. She acheived prominence within the K-indie community with "Duel Citizenship Poet" (2018) and its singles "America" and "Te Quiero Saranghae I Love You". Catalina rose to mainstream K-pop recognition with "Han Catil" (2022) and its lead single "Only Fools".
Life and career[]
1998 - 2006: Early life[]
Catalina Han Torres was born on April 8, 1998, in Santa Monica, California, to Han Seomi, a nail salon technician, and Jose Garcia Torres, a professional stylist. Seomi is South Korean and Jose is a Spaniard. Catalina's paternal lineage also includes some Irish, Portugese, and French roots. Catalina refers to herself as Spanish-Korean, and feels deeply connected to her family's roots. Her family follows and combines South Korean and Spanish traditions and customs.
Catalina was raised in the city of Santa Monica, but often spent time in neighbouring Malibu and within Los Angeles. She attended Roosevelt Elementary School, and participated in the school's theatre program. Catalina's mother brought her to an audition for an acting agency on the recommendation of one of her clients when Catalina was 5 years old. Catalina's vocal skill was discovered by the agency's talent scout after her acting audition had been rejected, and her parents enrolled her in vocal lessons. In 2005, Catalina won a children's singing contest.
Catalina signed to Top Hat Records as a part of their vocal training program at 8 years old. Through the program, Catalina participated in several local talent shows and recitals.
2007 - 2012: LILYanne[]
In 2007, Catalina was placed into Top Hat Record's all-girl youth vocal pop group LILYanne along with Savannah Baker, Olivia Gardener, Paris Zhao, and Mackenzie Vienna. Catalina used the name Kate rather than her full name as her stage name on the recommendation of the company. LILYanne was conceptualized as a girl group for a young female audience where each member had a unique style and image. Catalina was assigned a pastel and shy image that contrasted her personality as she was the youngest member. LILYanne debuted with the single "Don't Tell" in the summer of 2007 to mild success.
