"Blazing Flame (불꽃)" is the debut single of singer-songwriter Xavier Luna, digitally released through South Korean indie label 24D Arts on August 15, 2022. The song was written in the late 2010s by Luna and produced alongside rock musician Park Danho. A soul-indebted adult contemporary track, the song uses a metaphorical "guiding ball of flame in the darkness" to describe a loved one who has left a positive impact on the singer's life. Luna describes the work of American pop singers Alicia Keys and Adele as primary inspirations in the song's production. Initially first performed as an unreleased track with Danho at the 2022 COOLAHPALOOZA Music Festival, unexpected social media virality and strong demand from casual listeners prompted Luna and his label to release the song on streaming platforms.

"Blazing Flame" received critical acclaim from music critics for its vocal performance and production. The song peaked at number one on the Circle Digital Chart in South Korea, making him the first foreigner since Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi in 2021 to top the chart. The song also charted in 9 other territories, including his native Philippines where it reached the top ten. It was certified 2x Platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) in 2023 and won 13 music-show trophies. In the 2022 MBS Artist Awards, it was nominated for three awards, winning Best Live Performance and Best R&B/Soul Recording. It was also nominated for Song of the Year in the 8th Seoul Music Performance Awards, MBS Artist Awards, The Orign Awards, and The Collective Performing Arts Awards.

Background and release[]

Xavier Luna emerged in the South Korean music industry after becoming one of the six successful contestants of K-pop survival audition program SOL Puzzle. Since 2021, he has pursued songwriting and production work for other K-pop artists while promoting as a member of project boy group SOLVIZ, which led him to become the first foreign musician to win a Daesang at the 2021 MBS Artist Awards. Press coverage has brought curiosity about whether he would release solo music soon, to which he answered, "To be honest, I'm contented with being part of a K-pop group. Solo music is obviously a non-zero possibility, but I want to leave it to times where I crave to release art that I am passionate about."

Sometime in May 2022, following the strenuous promotions for The Fever Realm, Xavier began working with veteran rock musician and labelmate Park Danho, whom he previously described as a role model and the first Korean musician he had ever listened to. While discussing music and production, he brought up an old song that he wrote in 2019, and described his vision of it as "kinda blue-eyed soul vibes". Luna was strongly hesitant to exploring his past work out of shyness, but Park convinced him to show the drafts to him. In June 2022, Park offered to help him out with completing the song, asserting that he was confident Luna has a lot of potential as an individual musician. The following month, Park Danho was revealed as a performer at the 2022 COOLAHPALOOZA Alternative Music Festival in Incheon, with Luna as a guest performer. He brought Luna out towards the end of his set, where he played the guitars as Luna sung. A recording of the video by a Solariz (fan of SOLVIZ) who attended the concert would go viral on social media and reach over 3 million views in less than five days. The single was officially released alongside its music video on August 15, 2022 to all streaming platforms, debuting with 325,000 streams on the Spotify counter. A CD version of the single was also made available in South Korea, with "A Person", a soundtrack he recorded for thriller television series Acid Trip, serving as the B-side.

Composition[]

"Blazing Flame" was composed in the key of C# Minor, with a tempo of 106 beats-per-minute (BPM). Musically, the song is a pop soul influenced adult contemporary song with the discographies of Western pop singers Alicia Keys and Adele as credited influences. The song combines electric guitars, soaring strings, and a dynamic percussion to create a dramatic atmosphere that builds a structure of tension towards the pre-chorus and an explosive release in the chorus. The song's lyrics was originally written as a passion project in 2019 and uses the metaphor of a guiding, magical ball of flame in a dark forest to symbolize the loved ones that have helped Luna through the worst parts of his life.
