Kurokawa Akemi (Japanese: 黒河 暁美, Hangul: 쿠로카와 아케미), also known professionally as Akemi, is a Japanese singer under Heaven's Entertainment. She debuted as a member of South Korean-based multinational girl group, NAIAD, in 2018.
Background[]
Early life[]
Kurokawa Akemi was born on May 14, 2001, in Nara Prefecture, Japan. She lived with her single mom, a younger sister, and grandparents. She developed a deep bond with her family. She has two solid best friends in school who support her regardless of how stubborn she can sometimes be. She is described as somewhat introverted, moving at her own pace but always committed to fulfilling her goals and "desire." Her determination is showcased by how she thoroughly enjoyed her baton-twirling extracurricular activities since elementary school and competed in national-level championships. Through her baton twirling training, she learned how to dance, arranged her own music for performances, and made choreographies. Her singing talent was discovered by her and her friends as they enjoy doing karaoke routinely every weekend. She equally likes to sing both J-pop and K-pop songs and revealed that she learned a little bit of hangul to better her pronunciation.
In 2015, after completing a prefecture-level baton twirling competition, Akemi was scouted by Heaven's Entertainment casting associate, where they asked her to audition to be a trainee. Akemi, who expected to fail the audition, went for it anyway. Funnily, she passed all rounds of auditions in the same year. Her success made her anxious as she was faced with the option of leaving the baton-twirling world and Japan to become Heaven's trainee in Korea. She resolved to follow the idol path after words of encouragement from her family members and best friends.
Trainee period; 2015-2018[]
After graduating from middle school, she went to Korea and officially became a trainee under Heaven's Entertainment at 14. While taking dancing and vocal lessons, she took Korean classes for two years. According to her instructor, Akemi can be considered a "vocal ace" as her lower, and upper registers are very well developed before even debuting. Her elastic body and years of athletic training made learning even the most challenging choreography easy.
Akemi took piano, guitar and modeling lessons during her trainee period.
2018–present: NAIAD[]
On June 7, 2018, Akemi became the second member of NAIAD to be revealed.
Personality[]
Akemi is a sensible and selfless young woman known for her calm demeanor and 'softness.' This selflessness stems from her upbringing, where she took great concern in the hectic life of her single mom, having to go to work while taking care of her little brother. So she began to help out around the house without her mom asking her to do so. Her selflessness is also reflected in her school life. She obediently followed whatever task the teachers and trainers assigned her, assisted her friends in finishing their homework, and was ultimately regarded as one of the top honor students in her school. Her accomplishments as a baton twirling champion helped further build her 'perfect' image as an honor student. Her initial selflessness led her to the point where that perfect student image people crafted for her and Akemi's actual persona merged. The fear of betraying people's expectations snowballed, so Akemi had no choice but to endure the mental and physical torture to keep her honor student status spotless. It made her almost have no sense of self-worth, so she has made a habit of keeping her nose down and doing what is expected of her.
As she grew more subservient towards other people, especially those in authority, baton twirling slowly became something that brought joy to her no longer. That was one of the reasons why she was finally convinced to leave Japan to restart her life as an idol trainee, leaving her past life behind. She wanted to be more honest with herself, just like when she was with her family and close friends.
When she debuted, the fragment of Akemi's "exemplary honor student" personality remained for a while. She appeared very soft-spoken and well-mannered both off and on camera to keep her image sound as she represented herself and Japanese people in Korean media. After some time, she finally "gets the hang of it" and started to be less formal and became more comfortable showing her lively, fun, and talkative side.
The true Akemi is reliable, thanks to her honesty and great sense of duty. She is also very affectionate towards people who do not mind her not constantly being "on-guard," such as her fellow NAIAD members. When not forced to do something, she does her work earnestly. Due to her natural introversion nature, she has only a few real friends in real life, but she cherishes them greatly, which include the NAIAD members. She said her hobby is spending time with the NAIAD girlies.
