The 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards was held in Seoul, South Korea on December 1, 2024. The first ceremony since the award show returned to its original branding as the Hangang Artistry Awards in January 2024, the ceremony is operated by the Musician's Union of Seoul and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and honors the best music recordings, compositions, and artists between November 2023 and October 2024.
R3THR0 leads in the most nominated artists in the 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards, garnering nominations across 30 categories. If combining both solo activity and group membership, R3THR0 member Jay Kang is the most nominated musician in the ceremony with a record-breaking 9 nominations. In October 2024, it was announced that Ni.U and rm8z were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for their contributions to music, while Cherry Atlantic will be awarded the Breakout Artist Award for their exceptional and organic rise to popularity and critical acclaim throughout the year. Due to a significant increase in mainstream music industry activity in 2024, the number of nominations for the Grand Prizes were increased from 6 to 8 in order to push for better musical diversity in nominations.
R3THR0 won five awards, including the grand prize Album of the Year for Playtesting. Solo artist DEC won Song of the Year and Creator of the Year, marking the first time a rookie artist has won more than one Daesang in the ceremony, while JΣПΣЯΛƬIӨП won Artist of the Year and earned the group their first Hangang Daesang. Other winners included Nabi, Park Junmi, Ni.U, rm8z, HARAM, and Jay Kang (R3THR0) with two wins, and YuMI, Phantasmagoria, MIIX, Snowbaby (INTERSTELLAR), EPHEMERA, FUSION, Awkward Boy Syndrome, Shin Sarang, LIGHTERS, and more with one win.

Description[]
The ceremony opens with the performance set of solo artist MIIX. Inspired by the 2014 film The Purge: Anarchy, the solo artist is driving down a deserted freeway of a city in chaos, with his car beaten down and damaged. Inside the car, MIIX sings "Run For The Hills", a B-side from his album It's Ok, I'm Ok that is about being addicted to someone while knowing that they're also harmful to you and tearing you inside. As the song ends, his car is targeted with gun fire by a masked figure that seems to be an ex-lover of his. Angered by the betrayal, he incapacitates the ex-lover and a motorcycle gang, played by his backup dancers, arrives. The performance of the second song, "It's Ok, I'm Ok" begins. It is a confidence-boosting song about letting go of his ex, and telling their new lover that they can have him because they were not that great as they seemed anyway. After the performance, he struts away while the gang takes out their weapons, leaving his backstabber ex's fate to them.
The ceremony officially commences, as pop legend Noa, known for her hits such as "Boys Over Flowers", "Love", and "Can't Stop", the first of which won Best K-pop Solo Recording at last year's ceremony, walks to the podium. She officially opens the 2024 Hangang Artistry Awards with a five minute speech about her journey as an artist, and connecting it to the universal feeling of happiness that artists experience after receiving genuine recognition from their peers and the public:
"Before all the awards begin to be handed one by one, I'd love if every artist who has been nominated this year and is currently sitting in these tables to pat themselves on the back. I know this sounds corny or something, but I truly believe that being able to receive even a single nomination, without regard of how many trophies you actually win, is already a victory in itself, because it's already a sign that so many people love what you do, so keep doing it. It's not that award shows like Hangang are the greatest indicator of success and quality, but I feel like each one of you have worked hard so much to be where you are, and I hope you don't feel too burdened about the possibility of winning or not, because regardless of what happens, you're all amazing creators and artists who deserve to receive their flowers, one way or another. Thank you!"
Contrasting with the action-packed and chaotic stage brought by MIIX, solo artist Shin Sarang brings a performance that feels like being transported to the shorelines of a remote Pacific island away from civilization. She has brought to the stage the songs "Embrace" and "Midnight", the double title tracks from her second studio album Soul Soothers. With only an acoustic guitarist as her accompaniment, she shows off her calming voice yet engaging stage presence through the stripped-down ballads that she is performing. As her set ends, she reveals, "wait, there's more!" and a surprise artist goes on stage. It's singer-songwriter Xu Meixi! She pulls her beside her, and tells the crowd to give her an amazing send-off from the music industry before she retires by singing along. Despite the bitter nature of the song, Shin Sarang and her guitar gives a slightly lighter rendition of "Marital Feud", her successful collaboration with Oh Yunseo of ICARUS. The two give each other a hug as their stage ends, and the crowd gives a round of applause and chants.
Against a backdrop that slightly resembles a British pub, R3THR0's set begins with Jay Kang's solo rendition of "Do Flower Boys Dream of Utopian Cities?", accompanied by a violin and other orchestral instruments. The camera only shows the singer from a distance, but as his solo opening ends, it switches to a first person perspective, as if it was a customer walking into the venue. Jay looks at the camera and smiles, his expression of yearning turning into happiness, as if he had finally found his first love. The performance of "Treasure You", a song about being affectionate with someone who they want to be their lover, begins, as the six members enter the stage carrying mic stands with them. The melancholic atmosphere instantly becomes upbeat, and continues all the way to their performance of "Lights, Camera, Action!", the lead single from their smash hit album Playtesting.
Straight out of a bygone retrofuturistic artwork, rm8z's performance begins in a cluttered teenager's bedroom, with the expansive galaxies just outside their large window. Their performance begins with a more mature rendition of their 2019 debut song "Constellation", an energetic pop rock track that evokes the feeling of carefree youth with their deliberately messy but fun choreography. The second song is one of their most popular singles, "Star Rider", from 2020 studio album Cosmotic. The bedroom set "unpacks" itself, and reveals a remote mountainous planet in the middle of the celestial space. Backup dancers wearing different colors compliment the already bright and cutting-edge outfits of the members. In the end, smoke machines go off, depicting a storm in the planet that leads to the members being separated as the place turns into a bleak winter landscape. Amidst the desolate space landscape, rm8z begins the performance of their third song "검투사 (Gladiator)", from their 2023 studio album Roman Snowfall. This point of their medley leans towards showcasing their more emotional and introspective side, performing a song about fighting hopelessness and opting to fight until the end. Each member is in different part of the still white smoke-filled stage and standing on a rock, "unable" to see each other, but red strings seem to be tied on each of their small platforms. Following the red strings, the seven members successfully reunite with each other as the backup dancers return to the stage. Then, the final song of their medley, "운명의 끈 (String Of Fate)", from their newly released studio album Observatoire de Terre, is performed.
A mini tour through some of her greatest eras, Ni.U, dressed like a simple but elegant princess with a standout sparkly gown that is for sure going to make the headlines. She begins her performance with "pipipabpab", a catchy dance song with tropical house elements. This is followed by the megahit "Expensive Lady", a hip-hop song that showed her more powerful and luxurious side that became a domestic and international success. She then moves on to her recent hits, starting with "Sunrise", an orchestra-influenced upbeat pop song with uplifting lyrics. Her backup dancers come into the stage with equally stylish outfits, as if she is a princess doing a little dance number in her palace. Her live vocals are absolutely heavenly to hear, and it makes the audience feel like everything will be okay despite everything that is happening in the world right now. She closes her set with "Film", a synth-laden dance pop track about looking back at her teenage days. In the end, she flashes a genuine smile for the camera as audiences cheer, as if she was reflecting on how far she has come in the industry.
In a virtual seapunk-inspired beach setting, the four members of Nabi stand in rotating cylinder platforms that are meant to be reminiscent of the avatar selection screens in video games. Each member of the group is doing a sassy pose and also wearing winter-themed streetwear that is altered to slightly resemble an edgier, cyberpunk style. They first perform an even more experimental glitch-pop remix of their hit single "HEHE", before doing a robotic-style dance break that samples a track from their debut mini album The Creation. This transitions to the summer smash single "Ice Cream, Love", which is less edgy and more subdued but maintains the same vibe until the end of their set.

R3THR0 for Album of the Year, Best Duo/Group, Best K-pop Duo/Group Album, Best Hip-hop/Rap Recording, Best Album Production[]
Best Album Production (Jay, TaeTae, Duck)
- TaeTae: Wow! Thank you, thank you very much for this award. Partaking in the production of this album was really special to me, and I’m glad I did it justice. Thank you to our company, J-Music, for trusting me!
- Duck: I also want to extend thanks to Jay. [Jay smiles] Jay taught me so much during the production of this album, and whilst I’m still learning, everything I do know is thanks to him. [Duck ushers Jay towards the microphone]
- Jay: I am so grateful for this award. I really wanted to craft something special for Playtesting and it looks like I succeeded. I want to give my thanks to the gaming composers who inspired me to make this album: to Shoji Meguro, whose knowledge of a variety of genres is so vast it never fails to astound me; to Hideki Naganuma, who gave me advice on sampling and producing, and whose music is integral to my youth; and to the late Remi Gazel, the man whose video game music made me want to pursue music from such an early age. I owe this award to you.
- TaeTae: Thank you!!
Best Hip-Hop/Rap Recording
- [The group line up at the front of the stage, with Minhae in the centre.]
- Minhae: Ah, it feels good to be back up here again, one year later! [The crowd cheers]
- Beom-Seok: “Treasure You” was a song crafted with love and affection, just like the lyrics entail. It was a joy to write the lyrics for it.
- Jaesang: And we want to give our thanks to the producer, Jay Kang, for creating such an addictive song that we have all enjoyed performing.
- Jay: Thank you guys. Though Treasure You was primarily a rock-centric album, we wanted to show you all we haven’t lost our hip-hop roots. The fact we’ve been awarded for something so quintessentially us is something we are eternally grateful for.
- TaeTae: As part of the rap line, I would also like to express my gratitude for this award, in a genre that means so much to me.
- Insujo: Thank you all!
- [Duck lifts the trophy into the air, and the crowd cheers once again, before the group walk off stage]
Best Male Vocal Performer (Jay Kang)
- Jay: [Teary-eyed] God I’m tearing up a bit… [he laughs] Where do I even begin. There’s so many people I want to mention. To my parents, who always believed in me and supported me every step of the way in my music career… you taught me to always aim for the stars. Thank you to my friends back in England - [in English] you guys are a second family to me and, through everything, showed me what true love means. [In Korean] Thank you to VESK for allowing me the opportunity to show my love for music on national television. Thank you to J-Music for continuing to aid me in the development of my vocal abilities. Thank you to Beom-Seok, Insujo - [In English] - rats, I got the order wrong - [in Korean] Minhae, Duck, Jaesang, and TaeTae, for always having my back, and being the best set of brothers I could have ever asked for. Thank you to Hangang, for honouring me with this award. I want to say one more thing. [In English] I used to feel like… [tears up] I was always going to be a nobody. That my voice wasn’t good enough, that I’d never, ever make it. I was a random teenager in London and yet here I am, standing here, holding a Hankie in my hand. To all of you watching who have doubts, know that if you have talent, and drive, you will be something. You will make it. You just have to believe in yourself. And to all the people who said I couldn’t sing, who said I was a fool to pursue music… to all the people who laughed in my face, or spoke badly behind my back… I just have one thing to say. [He holds up his trophy into the air] I. win. [In Korean] Thank you everyone! [The crowd cheers as he walks off stage]
Best K-pop Duo/Group Album
- Jay: Wow… I don’t even know what to say. Playtesting is an album that, really more than any of our other releases, was a true group effort. Every single member standing beside me… [Turns around to see Insujo and Beom-Seok behind him] or behind me [he chuckles] worked tirelessly in writing lyrics, pitching melodies, researching different games and songs, and even producing for this record. We could not have achieved this award without every single one of us. Thank you guys. [Jaesang pats Jay on the shoulder]
- Beom-Seok: Thank you to J-Music, who gave us complete creative control. You let our imaginations run wild and allowed us to create an album truly representative of our collective passions and creativity.
- Minhae: To .mR3s, thank you for your love and support. This album only performed so well because of you.
- Jaesang: And to all the fellow nominees in this category, we want to extend this award to you all. It has been an amazing year for K-pop group albums, and hopefully that trend continues into 2025.
- Insujo: Thank you to Jay, TaeTae, and Duck for producing this album, and to all the original composers of the songs we incorporated onto the record.
- TaeTae: [Holding up the trophy] Thank you Hangang!! [The crowd cheers as the group step off the stage]
Best Duo/Group
- [In shock and disbelief, the R3THR0 members slowly wander onto stage. They stand around the microphone. Minhae steps forward]
- Minhae: .mR3s… we did it! [The crowd cheers] I don’t even know what to say. We were just seven ordinary boys with dreams we thought were just distant. We threw ourselves at a golden opportunity and were lucky enough to benefit from it. We journeyed through the trauma of 7 Tiers, to make this group. But to me, you guys are more than a group… [He looks at his fellow members] You’re my family. [The crowd cheers as Duck hugs Minhae]
- TaeTae: R3THR0 truly changed all of our lives. To be able to stand here, having won in a category full of outstanding musicians, honestly feels surreal. We want to congratulate every single nominee for their incredible output this year!
- Insujo: Through everything, our fans have stuck by us. Thank you, .mR3s.
- Duck: This award truly means the world. It’s hard to articulate just how much this really means. We are all eternally grateful and will work hard to continue to be a group people can look up to. Thank you, Hangang! [The crowd cheers as the group walk off stage]
Album of the Year
- [The R3THR0 members, all teary-eyed, stand on stage. Jay steps forward]
- Jay: Guys… I don’t even know what to say… [he begins to cry, as Minhae and Insujo hug him] God, I wanted to come up here and say something cold like, “wow, I could get used to this view”. But in this moment, I don’t feel like bragging. We feel so honoured to be standing here with our first ever Daesang. It has not always been an easy road, but we poured our heart and soul into our output this year. To be standing here with this award… it truly is an overwhelming honour. Thank you, everyone!
- Jaesang: We were just seven kids but we’ve always stood by each other and worked hard together, as a team. This album was the product of all of our teamwork and camaraderie. To know it all paid off is just… so heartwarming.
- Minhae: We have to thank, once again, all .mR3s. 5 awards in one night is no joke, seriously. We would never have been able to dream of this without you guys, our loyal and loving fanbase. Please continue to support us as we embark on new adventures!
- Insujo: Thank you to J-Music, for allowing us to truly craft the record we envisioned, and for trusting us to deliver on the promises we made to you.
- Beom-Seok: Thank you to Jay, TaeTae, and Duck for producing this album for us. The talent you guys possess elevated this record to what it is now - a Daesang winner.
- TaeTae: [After hugging Beom-Seok] Truly, the brains of the group, Jay, is someone else we must thank. [Jay starts to cry again, and Duck hugs him] You… [TaeTae tears up] Are a rock. You support us, you uplift us, and you’ve given us all the confidence to think we could win an award like this. And now we have. So thank you. [Jay and TaeTae hug]
- Duck: Thank you to the Musician's Union of Seoul, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the MBS Selection Committee panel. Your recognition means the world to us.
- Jay: I love this group, I love this industry, I love this country, and I love every single one of you at home. I’m so proud to be able to say this with my comrades… [to the group] Ready? [They nod, before all placing their hands onto the trophy and lifting it up]
- All: We won!!!! Thank you!!!! [The group bow before walking off stage, as the crowd cheer]

- FUSION: See you in 2025, we will be back! Blessed Be FUSION!
Xavier Luna for Best Experimental/Alternative Album[]
Xavier bursts out laughing for no reason before going on stage to receive his trophy. In his speech, he starts off by saying he's not going to pretend to be shocked because he submitted his music for the category in hopes of winning, but is regardless genuinely joyful that his passion project went this far. He expresses his thanks to his family, friend, and fans for supporting him even if the latter might have expected K-pop music for his solo work, and promises that he'll show a versatile identity as an artist. He uses the last 15 seconds of his speech slot to call for the industry to do better in treating idols and musicians, in response to a recent ruling by the South Korean labor ministry that denied recognition of idols as workers.
Awkward Boy Syndrome for Best Metal/Rock Recording[]
- All: Wow!
- Oscar: First of all, this is a genuinely big honor to receive. Best Metal/Rock Recording, competing against really talented ensembles like FUSION and ANP Death Angelz, it will probably take a while for us to process what we just won today.
- Kylo: We of course would like to thank our supportive families, friends, and label staff, I think a speech isn't enough to show how much they have contributed to where we are now, but please just know how much gratitude we would like to give for how you've rooted for us from the start.
- Charlie: ABLESS! Of course we're not going to forget you all. I know that some of you used to be fans of us already back when we were still performing as K-pop idols, and to still be sticking with us when we've now decided to pick up the mic stands and instruments instead, is what really touches us the most. We would love to thank you for giving your unconditional love and please stick with us for a long time, because we'll make sure your stay is worth it!
- Echo: As the songwriter and producer of "Midnight Escapism", I am absolutely ecstatic to see how much the song has been well-received on the charts and by the public. Seeing everyone singing it word-for-word in university festivals and other live events we perform in, it's absolutely overwhelming in a good way. Thank you. Sierra, would you like to speak?
- Sierra: As a new member of the band, I would like to thank fans for being so welcoming to me. I may have not been part of this record, but I'll be sure to show you what I am capable of as a member of Awkward Boy Syndrome. Te amo!
- Romeo: And lastly, we would like to use our slot to bring awareness to the upcoming general strike by 70,000 railway and education service workers across South Korea, beginning December 5. As artists who are privileged to be comfortably making music in studios and earning a profit from albums alone, we want to do our part by openly standing in solidarity with the workers who are demanding for better working conditions and wages, so they can properly perform their jobs that other citizens such as us benefit from.
- Charlie: Once again, this has been Awkward Boy Syndrome! We hope to showcase more surprises and good music as a band next year, so please keep an eye out for us. Thank you! [collective bow]
