Performances[]

Co-ed hip-hop collective the Yongsan Tenement Collective opens the award ceremony, giving a speech about the perseverance of a musician amidst the socioeconomic challenges that the system throws against them. This speech becomes a rap about breaking down every wall that prevents you from reaching your true passions and meaning in life, regardless of the sacrifices to be made. They perform a medley of multiple songs from their album 2020s Propagandist, which was critically acclaim by music critics for its social commentary on late stage capitalism and recent abuses committed by government institutions in South Korea.

Im Min-seok opening speech (translated): Welcome to the 2023 MBS Artist Awards, everyone. I am your host, Im Min-seok of Arriviste. For the 25th time since the ceremony first took place in 2000, we will be recognizing the countless musicians, both mainstream and underground, who have made significant strides in the music scene as they showcase their identity and specialties to the country and the rest of the world. [2 more minutes of speech explaining the awards and the motto of the ceremony] We have a massive roster of talented performers and nominees today that I'm sure everyone is already waiting for. Are you ready, MAA? [Crowd screams] Exactly. It's time to see what is in store for us today!

Boy group EPHEMERA performs next. Beginning with their song, "The Bane of My Existence", EPHEMERA does a walk-through of their lore. The set is adorned with various clocks and calendars that represent time, an integral part of their debut concept. This is followed by the performance of "Take My Hand", as the slow and poignant atmosphere of their performance is replaced by the song's upbeat sound and harmonies. The stage becomes more vibrant, representing the outcomes of them leaving their past behind and entering a terrifyingly unpredictable yet exciting future together as a group. The third performer is boy group R3THR0. Their stage features a backdrop resembling a neighborhood in 1960s Britain, R3THR0 is seen dressed up like a pop rock band from the British Invasion era. They perform their critically acclaimed hit song "On Your Own", where they provide both vocals and instruments as part of a live band arrangement.

The only band performing in the ceremony, Killed Offscreen, begins their set. Killed Offscreen's set begins with a party of the wealthiest people, partying carelessly in a ballroom set. The lights suddenly go out and an evil laugh is heard as guests run for their lives while an invisible killer kills them one by one. The background turns into a burning inferno as the members of Killed Offscreen begin their set, performing "Everybody Wants To Be Famous" and "Marathon". Jongyeol+Jaehyun's performance for "Black & White" is set in the background of an old-fashioned pub set in 1946, in-time with the post-World War II setting of the song's romance storyline. With nothing but two wooden stools as if it was a casual open-mic stage, the duo share their critically acclaimed song to an audience of hundreds if not thousands.

The longest stage in the 2023 MBS Artist Awards, Life5's performance begins with a medley of each of the solo songs they released this year, oldest to youngest: "No Filter" (Mae), "Come and Go" (Serenity), "Mad" (Bomb), "Hold On" (Lea), and "Don't Lecture Me" (Tan). With each performance, the stadium glows in their respective colors. After the medley performance, the five girls join together, signifying the joining of five individual colors and styles to become one group called Life5. Life5 then unexpectedly performs an unreleased song called "WE'RE THE TREND", with the audience loudly cheering. The Best Hip Hop and Best Music Video award is revealed to have belonged to two Life5 members: Bomb for the former with her song "MAD", and Mae for the latter with the music video for "NO FILTER".
